The €100m Midfielder Who Rejected Manchester City

Manchester City threw money at their midfield this summer. What they really wanted never even made it to the table.

According to Bild, Aleksandar Pavlovic had been on City’s list since March, earmarked early as their preferred signing for the centre of the pitch. The 22-year-old Bayern Munich midfielder ticked every box: technically clean, tactically disciplined, already trusted at one of Europe’s most demanding clubs. City were ready to go as high as €100 million.

It didn’t matter. Pavlovic simply wasn’t interested in leaving Bayern for England.

Guardiola’s Exit, Maresca’s Push – Same Answer

By spring, the picture at City was already changing. Inside the club, it was understood that Pep Guardiola would step down, with Enzo Maresca lined up to take over. The Italian, fresh from impressing with his ideas and positional play, saw Pavlovic as a cornerstone for his rebuild.

Maresca even tried to intervene personally. A new coach, a new project, a starring role in one of the world’s most powerful squads – the pitch was clear. The response was just as clear.

Pavlovic, already a Germany international, categorically ruled out a move. With the player shutting the door so firmly, City never advanced to an official bid, despite their willingness to hit nine figures.

City Rip Up the Old Midfield

While Pavlovic stayed put in Munich, City detonated their own midfield.

Rodri, the metronome of their recent dominance, left for Barcelona. Bernardo Silva, the creative brain and relentless presser, departed for Real Madrid. Tijjani Reijnders moved on to Al-Qadsiah. Nico Gonzalez joined Newcastle. In a single window, the core that had underpinned City’s control of games was stripped away.

For a long stretch, the rebuild looked oddly thin. Only Elliot Anderson had arrived, signed from Nottingham for €135 million, a huge fee and a bold bet on potential rather than a proven superstar.

The urgency grew as the window ticked down. The pressure finally told.

Just before the deadline, City moved hard. Ayyoub Bouaddi came in from Lille for €95 million. Enzo Fernandez followed from Chelsea for €145 million. Three central midfielders, €375 million in total, all in one window.

It was a statement. It was also a reminder of the one player they couldn’t buy.

Bayern’s New Graduate Stays at Home

While City reshaped their identity, Pavlovic stayed exactly where he wanted to be.

A product of Bayern’s youth system, he broke through last season and quickly looked at home. He made 44 competitive appearances for the club, scoring four goals and adding two assists. Not eye-popping numbers, but enough to show his growing influence in a team that demands precision in every phase.

Germany took note. Pavlovic made his senior debut in June 2024 and has already collected 15 caps. At 22, he is not just a prospect anymore; he is part of the national setup, trusted on the international stage as well as at Bayern.

City saw that profile and tried to move early. Bayern saw it too – and kept him. The player himself made the choice even easier.

In a market where almost everything has a price, Aleksandar Pavlovic became something rarer: the €100 million midfielder who turned his back on the Premier League and chose to grow where he started.
