Al-Hilal's Perfect Start Crumbles Against Neom
Al-Hilal’s perfect start to the Roshn League season cracked before a ball was even kicked.
As the players went through their final stretches and sprints, Yassine Bounou – the calm, imposing presence behind Al-Hilal’s high defensive line – pulled up injured in the warm-up. In an instant, Simone Inzaghi’s plans were shredded. Mohammed Al-Owais, who expected a night on the bench, was thrown into the cauldron at the last moment.
The shock never really left Al-Hilal.
A bad start turns worse
From the opening minutes, the rhythm that had carried Al-Hilal to five wins from five disappeared. The back line, usually so sure of itself with Bounou barking instructions, looked unsure. Passes went astray. The distances between defenders stretched. Neom smelled uncertainty and went after it.
They pressed high, forced mistakes, and pinned the hosts back. Every hopeful ball into the Al-Hilal half seemed to cause panic.
The pressure told early.
In the 15th minute, Kalidou Koulibaly, the man brought in to bring authority and leadership, instead put his side in a hole. Trying to deal with a cross, the Senegalese defender glanced a header into his own net, leaving Al-Owais helpless and Neom celebrating a gift of an opener.
It was a brutal blow. Al-Hilal were still processing the loss of Bounou when they found themselves 1-0 down, chasing a team that had arrived with confidence and a clear game plan.
Al-Owais exposed, Neom ruthless
The goal rattled Al-Hilal even more. Neom, buoyed by the lead, tightened their shape and waited for more errors. They did not have to wait long.
Al-Owais, already under the microscope, endured a first half that will linger in the analysis room. The understanding with his defenders wasn’t there, and every hesitant movement drew nervous gasps from the stands.
Then came the 44th minute.
Al-Owais rushed off his line in a desperate attempt to cut out danger, only to leave chaos in his wake. The ball broke loose, Al-Hilal’s defence froze, and it spilled into the Neom penalty area with blue shirts scrambling. Amadou Koné reacted quickest, pouncing to steer in a second goal that underlined the scale of the crisis.
Two goals down, both born from confusion and individual errors. Bounou’s absence was no longer just unfortunate; it had become the defining storyline of the night.
Al-Owais had been asked to step into the Moroccan’s role on a moment’s notice. The reality on the pitch was unforgiving: he struggled, and the defensive unit led by Koulibaly unravelled in front of him.
Numbers that cut deep
An Opta statistic framed the mountain Al-Hilal now had to climb. Neom had won all three matches this season in which they scored the opening goal across the first five rounds of the Roshn League. Once they strike first, they know how to lock games down.
Now they had two.
For a side that had strolled into the sixth round with a perfect record – five wins, 15 points, and the aura of early-season dominance – this was uncharted territory. The match that was supposed to confirm their superiority instead turned into a stress test of their resilience.
Trailing 0-2 at half-time is not something Al-Hilal experience often in the Pro League. The last time they walked down the tunnel two or more goals behind came against Al-Fateh in May 2025. That night, they roared back from the same 2-0 deficit to win 4-3 in a wild second-half turnaround.
The question now is whether this version of Al-Hilal, shaken by the loss of Bounou and undone by their own mistakes, still has that kind of response in them when the season’s first real storm hits.
