Always Ready's 6-0 Win Over Guabira Raises Extortion Allegations

At the Estadio Municipal de Villa Ingenio, the scoreboard said rout. The story behind it was far darker.

Always Ready dismantled Guabira 6-0 on matchday 19, a statement win in a tight Bolivian title race. Yet within hours, the result was no longer being discussed in terms of tactics or form. It was being questioned as a product of fear.

Guabira goalkeeper Ferrel started the game but did not make it to half-time. After conceding three goals, he was withdrawn, his night apparently over for performance reasons. Then the allegations emerged.

“The sport has been tainted”

Speaking after the match, Guabira head coach Eguez laid bare the pressure his goalkeeper had faced before kick-off, going public with claims of extortion and death threats aimed at Ferrel and his family.

“We cannot conduct a serious analysis when death threats are involved. Something suspicious is happening and it needs to be investigated. The sport has been tainted,” Eguez said, quoted by the Associated Press.

He detailed the alleged ultimatum given to his goalkeeper: pay a specific sum or concede three goals, or his wife and mother would be killed.

In one stroke, a routine league fixture had turned into a potential crime scene.

Union and club demand answers

The fallout was immediate. The Bolivian Professional Footballers' Union (Fabol) stepped in, demanding that authorities move quickly and decisively.

“What happened to the Guabira players cannot go un-investigated. A clear precedent must be set in Bolivian football,” said Fabol general secretary David Paniagua.

Always Ready, despite being the beneficiaries of the 6-0 scoreline, also called for a full inquiry. The club’s legal department made it clear they did not want a title race overshadowed by suspicion.

“Football must not be tainted. We will ask the Public Prosecutor's Office to investigate so that the sport's integrity is preserved,” said Marcelo Ortiz, the club’s legal advisor.

Two sides, one emphatic result, and a shared demand: find out what really happened.

Investigation looming over the title race

The Public Prosecutor's Office, along with the federation’s integrity officials, is expected to open a formal investigation to identify those behind the alleged extortion scheme and to determine whether the match result can stand without question.

On the field, Always Ready remain locked level with Bolivar at the top, their 6-0 win the kind of scoreline that usually sends a message in a title race. Now it carries a different weight, sitting under a cloud that no contender wants.

Guabira, ninth in the table, face a more complex task than simply fixing their defensive shape. They must regroup in a dressing room where players have been told their lives, and the lives of their families, can be used as leverage.

The league will move on. Fixtures will pile up, points will be won and lost. But until this case is resolved, one question will hang over Bolivian football: can anyone trust what they see on the pitch?
