Arsenal's Champions League Draw Day: A New Era Begins

Arsenal know the lie of the land now. The qualifiers are done, the field is set, and every possible opponent in the new-look Champions League League Phase has been confirmed.

But one of European football’s great cathedrals is off the itinerary. No San Siro. Not this season.

Draw day, new era

The draw for the League Phase will be held on Thursday, August 27 at 17:00 BST, with UEFA promising the full fixture list – dates and kick-off times – no later than Saturday, August 29. Fans won’t be left refreshing in the dark either; UEFA will push a notification on their social channels shortly before the schedule drops.

Arsenal enter the competition as Premier League champions and sit in Pot 1. Under the old format, that status shaped the entire campaign. Under this new system, it barely changes a thing.

Every club, regardless of pot, will face the same structure:

  • Two teams from Pot 1
  • Two from Pot 2
  • Two from Pot 3
  • Two from Pot 4

One at home. One away. Eight games to define a European season.

Who Arsenal can’t face

There are still familiar limits. Domestic clashes are off the table in the League Phase, which means no Liverpool, Manchester City, Aston Villa or Manchester United until the knockout rounds. The Premier League rivalries will have to wait.

Then comes the twist. A new UEFA rule states that clubs cannot play the same League Phase fixture three seasons in a row. Arsenal have travelled to Inter Milan in each of the last two campaigns, in 2024/25 and 2025/26. That specific tie – Inter away in the League Phase – is now blocked for 2026/27.

So the San Siro trip is gone, ruled out by regulation rather than the draw itself. The narrative many fans were quietly expecting – another night under the towering stands in Milan – disappears with a line in the rulebook.

That does not mean Inter are off the board entirely. Arsenal can still be paired with the Italian champions; they just have to come to the Emirates Stadium this time.

A different kind of jeopardy

The pots still matter for seeding, for perception, for pride. But in this format, they don’t shield anyone. Pot 1 status doesn’t guarantee a soft landing, only a different mix of danger.

What Arsenal do know is this: eight opponents, spread across four pots, with no English club in sight and no away day at Inter Milan. The rest comes down to the balls in the bowl and the quirks of a new competition that is still finding its own traditions.

The question now is simple. If Arsenal can’t walk out at the San Siro this season, where will they make their defining European statement instead?
