Arsenal's Left Winger Search Hits Another Dead End
Arsenal’s search for a new left winger looks set to hit another dead end, and this time the door is being slammed shut at Anfield.
Liverpool’s Rio Ngumoha, the 18-year-old wide forward attracting serious attention from the Premier League champions, is edging towards committing his long-term future to the club despite confirmed interest from Arsenal and previous links with Bayern Munich.
Arsenal hunting, Liverpool closing the door
Arsenal have been in the market for a left-sided attacker for 2027. They pushed for Morgan Rogers. They pushed for Vinicius Junior. They landed neither.
Gabriel Martinelli left and no like-for-like replacement arrived. Leandro Trossard was moved on and Christos Tzolis came in, but the hole on that flank remains obvious. David Ornstein has already hinted that something could happen in January, with the club expected to explore options again once the window opens.
Naturally, that led them to Ngumoha – one of the standout young talents in his position and already on the radar of Europe’s elite.
But the timing looks all wrong for Arsenal.
Liverpool move to lock down their next star
Liverpool, aware of the noise and the calibre of clubs circling, have acted early. TEAMtalk revealed earlier this month that the club and Ngumoha’s camp have reached an agreement in principle over a lucrative new contract at Anfield.
The key phrase there: in principle. Talks are ongoing to turn that framework into a fully signed deal, but the mood on Merseyside is calm. Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke reports that Liverpool do not expect major complications.
The club want him. The player, crucially, is happy.
O’Rourke outlined the situation clearly: Liverpool are “desperate” to keep Ngumoha, believe he will get regular starts this season, and feel confident his long-term future lies at Anfield. Ngumoha, for his part, is understood to have bought into the pathway presented to him – a route from exciting prospect to central figure in Liverpool’s next iteration.
The pressure from outside has not shifted that stance.
“Rio is Liverpool’s future”
Fabrizio Romano has echoed the same message. Bayern Munich and others tested the waters in the summer, but Liverpool’s position never moved: not for sale, not leaving, not up for negotiation.
“Rio is Liverpool’s future,” Romano reported, underlining the club’s internal view of the teenager. Interest from elsewhere is described as inevitable rather than alarming. When a player is widely regarded as one of the best young wingers in his age group, scouts follow.
What never followed was a serious discussion about a sale.
Now, as Arsenal’s name resurfaces in the conversation, the dynamic remains unchanged. The north London club have kept their options open after failing to secure a direct Martinelli successor, and Ngumoha would naturally sit high on any long-term shortlist. Romano suggests that if a window opens in 2027, 2028 or beyond, Arsenal would be among the clubs ready to move – alongside suitors from abroad.
That is the level Ngumoha already operates at in the minds of recruiters.
Arsenal wait, Liverpool act
For now, though, the story belongs to Liverpool. They are in active talks over a new contract. Conversations are ongoing around guarantees, playing time and financial terms, with both sides working to find the right balance.
Nothing is signed yet. That matters. Until ink hits paper, every top club in Europe will keep monitoring the situation, waiting for the slightest crack.
But all the current indicators point one way: Ngumoha staying put, Liverpool tightening their grip on a player they believe can define their next era, and Arsenal once again staring at a left flank that still needs a long-term answer.
