Arsenal Miss Out on Malick Fofana to Sunderland

Arsenal have been beaten to a Deadline Day winger – and not by who you’d expect.

The club had lined up Lyon’s Malick Fofana as a late-window solution out wide, opening talks with the Ligue 1 side on Monday as they searched for depth on the flanks. The 21-year-old, highly regarded and on an upward curve, quickly emerged as one of their primary options.

Then the deal stalled. And slipped away.

Reports from Santi Aouna and David Ornstein say Arsenal refused to go to Lyon’s asking price of around €40 million. That hesitation left the door wide open. A Premier League rival walked straight through it.

Not a Champions League contender. Not a direct top-four competitor.

Sunderland.

The north-east club moved decisively, striking a €30 million agreement with Lyon, plus add-ons that push the total closer to the French side’s original demands. While Arsenal weighed up the numbers, Sunderland put them on the table.

Fofana was understood to be open to a move to north London and, according to Fabrizio Romano, even held talks with Mikel Arteta. The pathway looked clear: a young, ambitious winger, a club chasing trophies on multiple fronts, a manager known for improving talent.

Then the landscape changed in a flash. Sunderland accelerated, Arsenal held their line, and the player’s destination flipped.

It is not the first time Fofana has been close to the Premier League this summer. Crystal Palace tracked him earlier in the window and came close to an agreement with Lyon, only for the player to reject a move to Selhurst Park. The fit wasn’t right. The project didn’t convince him.

This time, he will board a plane to the north east for a medical, completing one of the more surprising moves of Deadline Day and leaving Arsenal to count the cost of a missed opportunity.

The timing makes it sting.

Arteta’s squad is already thin on the left after sanctioning the departures of Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli. Those exits have stripped away proven Premier League experience and left the manager relying heavily on what remains of his attacking core.

Ethan Nwaneri is also set to undergo a medical at Borussia Dortmund ahead of a loan move, another young attacking option stepping away from the immediate first-team picture. Christos Tzolis has arrived from Club Brugge earlier in the window, but he alone does not solve the depth issue on the flank.

Arsenal wanted another winger. They identified one. They spoke to him.

And on Deadline Day, they watched him choose someone else.
