Arteta Praises David as a Transformative Signing
Mikel Arteta was in no mood for transfer league tables or ranking games, but his message about his goalkeeper could hardly have been clearer: this signing has shifted the club’s ceiling.
Facing the media ahead of this weekend’s league fixture, the Spanish manager refused to be drawn into labelling the keeper as his “best” bit of business. The label, he suggested, is irrelevant compared to the impact.
“I don't know – he's been a tremendous signing, there is no question about that,” Arteta said when asked if the goalkeeper was his finest deal in the market. “Whether he is the best or not is just an opinion. It doesn't matter, we are so happy to have him. He has elevated the team to a different level and now we have to maintain that level.”
That last line carried the weight of a manager who knows exactly what has changed. With David in goal, the team has not only found security but a platform. His presence has altered the way they build from the back, the way they squeeze the pitch, the way they ride out storms.
Arteta was keen to frame that transformation not just around talent, but around character. The early months were not smooth, and he wanted that on the record.
“I think it's his mentality,” Arteta explained. “David has tremendous quality but he has overcome a lot of difficulties and challenges to reach this point. It wasn't easy at the beginning, he had to dig in and prove himself. Now, he has the right to be one of the best.”
That journey matters to Arteta. In a squad built on intensity and resilience, the goalkeeper has become a symbol of both: questioned at the start, hardened by scrutiny, now central to everything.
The manager’s refusal to crown him as his “best” signing sounded less like doubt and more like a manager protecting the collective. The praise, though, was unmistakable. David has changed the level — and Arteta’s challenge now is to make sure the rest of the team stay there with him.
