Aston Villa Signs Ibrahim Mbaye from PSG for €55m

Aston Villa have stepped into territory usually reserved for Europe’s superclubs, striking an agreement with Paris Saint-Germain to sign highly rated winger Ibrahim Mbaye – and snatching him away from Liverpool’s gaze in the process.

The 18-year-old, long viewed as one of PSG’s brightest attacking prospects, is heading for the Premier League. Just not to Merseyside.

Liverpool had explored a move as they quietly assessed options for life after Mohamed Salah. Mbaye’s profile – a right-winger with pace, direct running and top-level experience despite his age – ticked a lot of boxes. The problem was the price.

PSG spent the summer shifting their valuation depending on who was calling. Liverpool were quoted around €70 million. There was a feeling that figure might soften, but the Anfield hierarchy chose not to get dragged into a lengthy negotiation and turned their full attention to securing their primary target, Bradley Barcola.

That decision opened the door for Villa. They didn’t hesitate.

Villa’s long game pays off

This is not a late, opportunistic punt. Villa have tracked Mbaye for some time and were already keen in January, only to be rebuffed when PSG refused to sell mid-season.

The situation changed after the winter. Mbaye returned from the Africa Cup of Nations, where he added international minutes with Senegal to an already impressive CV, but saw his club game time shrink in the second half of the campaign. For a teenager hungry for minutes at the highest level, the message was clear: he needed a new stage.

Villa were ready to offer it.

According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, Villa have now agreed a €55 million fee with PSG, a deal smoothed by the strong relationship between PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi and Villa co-owner Nassef Sawiris. Mbaye is expected to sign a long-term contract once the final details are wrapped up.

For a player still only 18, his body of work is striking. Mbaye has already made 42 senior appearances for PSG and has represented Senegal both at the Africa Cup of Nations and at the World Cup this summer. He arrives in England not as a project for tomorrow, but as a forward ready to impact the present.

Emery gets his winger

Unai Emery has been clear about what he wanted: another winger capable of stretching defences, running in behind and offering a different threat in wide areas. Mbaye fits that brief and then some.

His arrival also lands at a crucial moment in Villa’s wider transfer strategy. The club have been in talks with AC Milan forward Rafael Leao in recent days, exploring a bold move for the Portuguese star. But indications are that Leao has chosen Galatasaray as his preferred destination, unconvinced by Villa’s contract proposal.

That setback could have left a hole in Villa’s plans. Instead, the agreement for Mbaye drops into place at exactly the right time, preserving the momentum of a club intent on staying in the Champions League conversation and refusing to be cowed in elite markets.

Villa are not just shopping in new aisles. They’re winning the race for players Liverpool wanted.

Now the question shifts from whether Mbaye is ready for the Premier League to something far more intriguing: just how high can this Villa side climb with an 18-year-old PSG graduate tearing down the right flank?
