Bartina Koeman, Partner of Ronald Koeman, Passes Away at 65

Bartina Koeman, steadfast partner of Ronald Koeman and a familiar presence around Dutch football for nearly four decades, has died at the age of 65.

Her husband announced the news on Instagram on Tuesday, confirming the loss of the woman who had stood beside him from his early days at Ajax to his role as national team manager of the Netherlands.

A Long Battle, Fought in Public and in Private

Bartina’s illness shaped the later chapters of the Koeman family story. Doctors first diagnosed her with breast cancer in 2010. She recovered, only for the disease to return in 2018. In 2023, during Ronald Koeman’s second spell in charge of the Dutch national team, she was told she had chronic breast cancer.

Even as the diagnosis darkened, the family tried to cling to moments of hope. In a television appearance in December 2025, Ronald Koeman explained that treatments had been effective after doctors found metastases the previous year. It was a rare, candid glimpse into the strain behind the scenes of a high-pressure coaching job.

Through it all, the couple continued to live their lives in the public eye, while navigating a deeply private struggle.

A Family in Mourning

The Koeman family’s tribute captured both their grief and their pride.

"With intense sadness, but also with great pride and love, we say goodbye to my beautiful wife, our dearest mother and grandmother," they wrote in an Instagram post.

The couple had three children together, including Ronald Koeman junior, a goalkeeper for Eredivisie side Telstar. The family recently welcomed their fourth grandchild, a new life arriving just as they now confront a profound loss.

Ronald Koeman, 63, has spoken often about the role his wife played in his career. When he stepped down as national team manager after the World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, he highlighted how she had driven him on even while facing her own illness.

"My wife Bartina has, despite her own illness process, supported and encouraged me every day to finish my work as national coach. That testifies to an incredible strength. I am more grateful to her for that than I will ever be able to put into words," he said.

For a coach whose life has been lived under stadium floodlights, those words revealed where his true anchor lay.

More Than a Footballer’s Wife

Bartina Koeman was never simply a name in the background of match reports or touchline shots. Since marrying Ronald in 1985, when he was playing for Ajax, she became a recognisable figure in Dutch sports culture in her own right.

She built a career as an entrepreneur, launching her own cosmetic and skincare line, carving out an identity that stretched beyond the role of a footballer’s spouse. While her husband moved through some of Europe’s biggest clubs — PSV, FC Barcelona, Feyenoord among them — she managed both a growing business and a growing family.

Those who followed Dutch football across the 1980s, 1990s and into the modern era came to see the Koemans as one of the sport’s enduring partnerships: a defender and later coach whose career spanned generations, and the woman who travelled that demanding road with him.

Her death closes a chapter not only for a family but for a football culture that had grown used to seeing them together at major moments: title runs, international tournaments, managerial unveilings and farewells.

The game will move on, as it always does. But for Ronald Koeman and Dutch football, life from here will look and feel very different without Bartina alongside him.
