Basil Tuma Named in Malta Squad for UEFA Nations League

Aldershot Town’s summer gamble on Basil Tuma is starting to look like a masterstroke – and now Malta have underlined that judgment.

The 21-year-old winger has been named in Malta’s provisional 29-man squad for their upcoming international window, a reward for a sharp start to life with the Shots and a steady climb through the international ranks.

Tuma arrived at the EBB Stadium from Reading in the summer, a quietly intriguing signing rather than a headline grabber. Eight games later, he has helped drive Aldershot into eighth place with 15 points, injecting pace and direct running into a side looking upward rather than over its shoulder.

His journey to this point has been anything but straightforward. Born in Uganda, Tuma first pulled on national colours for his home country at the 2020 CECAFA Under-17 Championship, a raw talent testing himself on a regional stage. Two years later, in September 2022, Malta came calling at Under-19 level, opening a new chapter in his international career.

The senior breakthrough followed. In October 2024, Tuma made his Malta debut, thrown on at half-time and immediately changing the tempo of the game, winning a penalty and announcing himself as a weapon off the bench. Seven more caps have followed, each one tightening his grip on a place in a squad that is quietly trying to evolve.

Upcoming Fixtures

Now comes another chance to push on.

  • Malta face a demanding run of three UEFA Nations League fixtures over the next two weeks, starting away to Andorra on 24 September.
  • They break that sequence with a home friendly against Liechtenstein on 27 September, a useful opportunity for fringe players and emerging names like Tuma to stake a claim.
  • Then the stakes rise again. Gibraltar travel to Malta on 1 October in the Nations League, before Andorra make the return trip to round off the window on 4 October.

For Malta, it is a block of games that will shape their campaign. For Basil Tuma, it is something more personal: a fresh platform to show that Aldershot is just the beginning, not the ceiling.
