Bradford City Signs Defender Hayden Matthews on Loan

Bradford City have bolstered their back line with the season-long loan signing of Portsmouth defender Hayden Matthews, as the League Two club continues a targeted late-window rebuild.

The 22-year-old centre-back, capped once by Australia, arrives at Mbanq Valley Parade looking to relaunch a career that has stalled more through misfortune than ability. Portsmouth paid £1.25m to bring him in from Sydney FC in January 2025, a statement signing at the time, and he has since made 20 appearances for Pompey.

Then came the injuries.

His last competitive outing was the 1-1 draw with Birmingham City at Fratton Park on the final day of last season, a reminder of the level he has already operated at and the sharpness he now needs to rediscover in new surroundings.

For Bradford, this is not a one-off dip into the loan market; it is a clear pattern. Matthews becomes the third recent temporary arrival, following QPR midfielder Kieran Morgan and Blackburn Rovers defender George Pratt through the door. The spine of the side is being rebuilt with hungry loanees, players with something to prove and careers to kick-start.

Matthews fits that mould perfectly. A young international centre-back, a sizeable fee on his record, and a point to make after a stop-start spell on the south coast.

Now he gets a fresh stage at Valley Parade. The question is simple: can he turn promise into presence and make this his breakthrough season?
