Brian Sorensen Joins Ireland Women's Team as Assistant Coach

Brian Sorensen is set to step back into the international spotlight, with the former Everton manager joining the Republic of Ireland women’s camp as assistant coach for their crucial Women’s World Cup play-off qualifiers later this year.

The Dane will form part of a reshaped backroom team alongside Liverpool coach Amber Whiteley, adding Premier League experience and tactical detail to a staff gearing up for a high-stakes autumn. Sorensen is expected to combine the role with his current position as technical director of Aston Villa Women, linking up with Ireland during international windows.

It brings him back into close working contact with Carla Ward, now in charge of the Republic of Ireland and previously his touchline rival in the Women’s Super League when she managed Villa against his Everton sides. The dynamic shifts from opposition dugouts to a shared technical area, with Ward now able to tap into a coach who knows the English top flight inside out.

Ireland face Kazakhstan in the first round of World Cup play-off qualifying, a two-legged tie scheduled for 9 and 13 October. The margins will be thin. Selection calls, in-game tweaks, and set-piece detail could decide everything.

That is exactly the kind of battleground where Sorensen’s influence will be judged.
