Brian Sorensen Joins Republic of Ireland Women’s Team for World Cup Play-Offs
Brian Sorensen is set for a swift return to the international stage, with the former Everton manager joining the Republic of Ireland women’s set-up for their World Cup play-off push later this year.
The Dane is expected to step in as assistant coach, working alongside Liverpool coach Amber Whiteley as part of a bolstered backroom team for the high-stakes qualifiers. His arrival signals a clear intent: Ireland want every possible edge as they chase a place at the Women’s World Cup.
Sorensen will combine the role with his current position as technical director of Aston Villa Women. He is not stepping away from club football; instead, he will link up with Ireland during international windows, dropping into a familiar league landscape from a different technical area.
There is already a shared history in that technical area. Sorensen will work under manager Carla Ward, who previously went head-to-head with his Everton side in the Women’s Super League while in charge of Villa. Now, instead of plotting against each other, they will be stitching together a game plan for Ireland’s most important fixtures of the year.
World Cup Play-off Qualifying
The assignment is clear and unforgiving. Ireland face Kazakhstan in the first round of World Cup play-off qualifying, a two-legged tie scheduled for 9 and 13 October. Over 180 minutes, the margins will be thin, the pressure heavy.
That is exactly the kind of stage where an extra layer of top-level experience on the touchline can make a difference.
