Cal Poly Mustangs Fall to Arizona State in 2-0 Defeat

TEMPE, Ariz. — The first road trip of Cal Poly’s season lasted just 87 minutes and felt even shorter. Arizona State hit early, tightened the screws late, and sent the Mustangs home with a 2-0 defeat on Sunday night at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium.

The tone changed almost immediately.

Cal Poly barely had time to settle into its shape before the Sun Devils, unbeaten and brimming with confidence at 4-0-1, carved out the opener inside the first four minutes. The early punch stung. Head coach Bernardo Silva admitted as much, calling it “disappointing to concede a goal within the first five minutes.”

For a spell, though, his team punched back.

Once past the shock of the opener, the Mustangs (2-2-1) began to look like themselves. They pushed higher. They pressed the ASU backline, harassed the build-up, and forced turnovers that tilted the field, if not the scoreline. The game plan Silva referenced took shape in the middle third, where Cal Poly’s energy disrupted the rhythm of a technically sharp home side.

That pressure produced chances. Sophomore forward Maddy Cole, making her first start since transferring from Cal State Bakersfield, found space and tested the defensive organization of the Sun Devils. Her movement gave Cal Poly a focal point, but the final touch never arrived. Half-chances stayed just that. The equalizer never came.

Halftime brought a reset and, briefly, a genuine opening.

Just over six minutes into the second half, sophomore Kenzie Herzing nearly changed the entire feel of the night. She exploded down the right wing, burned past her marker into the box and unleashed a rising drive that had the Cal Poly bench on its feet. The shot screamed over the bar — close, but not close enough.

That miss felt like a hinge moment. ASU sensed the warning and responded with control.

The Sun Devils began to dictate tempo, moving the ball with more authority and pinning Cal Poly deeper. The Mustangs’ press, so active in the first half, lost some of its bite as the minutes ticked away in the desert heat. Arizona State’s quality in possession started to show in the stat sheet: by the end, the hosts held a 14-5 edge in shots.

Cal Poly’s junior goalkeeper, Shannon Porubski, kept the margin respectable. She finished with four saves, steady under pressure as ASU probed for the second goal that always felt like it was coming.

It arrived in the 82nd minute.

With Cal Poly chasing and legs tiring, the Sun Devils finally doubled their lead, tightening their grip on a match they had gradually taken over. Any hopes of a late Mustang surge disappeared with that finish.

Five minutes from full time, the weather made the final call. Inclement conditions in the area forced the match to be abandoned in the 87th minute, locking in the 2-0 result and cutting short any remaining chance of a dramatic twist.

For Silva and his squad, the night in Tempe offered a harsh lesson in margins: concede early, miss your best look, and a ruthless opponent will make you pay.

The road, though, only gets longer from here. Cal Poly continues its four-match swing away from home with a trip to Berkeley, where a Thursday afternoon date with Cal at 4 p.m. will quickly reveal how much they learned from the desert.
