Captaincy Dilemma: Haaland or Fernandes for Gameweek 2?
As the Gameweek 2 deadline looms into view, Fantasy Premier League managers are back in familiar territory: staring at the captaincy chip and trying not to blink first.
The clock is ticking towards Friday’s 6.30pm BST cut-off. The debate, though, feels almost timeless. Erling Haaland or Bruno Fernandes? Stick with the heavyweights who let you down, or twist towards the form players snapping at their heels?
Haaland and Fernandes: burned once, trusted again?
Nearly six million managers suffered through their Gameweek 1 blanks. Haaland at £15.5m, Fernandes at £12.0m – two premium price tags, two empty returns, and one very frustrated global player base.
Yet when the captaincy poll numbers dropped, the reaction was telling. No mutiny. No mass exodus. Just a reluctant, almost resigned, show of faith.
Haaland sits on 37% of the vote, a narrow but clear lead. The narrative writes itself: he has never failed to score against Crystal Palace in the league. That record now stands as both comfort blanket and warning label; before last weekend, he had also never blanked in Gameweek 1. One streak has already gone. Managers are betting the other doesn’t follow.
Fernandes trails just behind, with a little over 30% of the backing ahead of Manchester United’s home clash with Ipswich Town. On paper, it screams opportunity. In reality, the memory of that flat, underwhelming display against Hull lingers. The Portugal international still carries set pieces, penalties, and talisman status, but the trust is thinner. Managers aren’t quite jumping ship – they’re gripping the rail a little tighter.
Arsenal, Chelsea and the chasing pack
So is this really a two-horse race again? Not entirely.
The early-season optimism around Arsenal and Chelsea has crept into the captaincy conversation. Both sides impressed in their opening wins, both offer in-form assets, and both have fixtures that tempt.
The defending champions head to a struggling Aston Villa, a trip that usually spells danger for the hosts and opportunity for anyone backing their attacking stars. Chelsea, meanwhile, welcome Brighton and Hove Albion to Stamford Bridge on Sunday, a home tie that feels ripe for attacking returns.
The pressure finally told in the poll numbers for one man in particular. Only one player outside the Haaland–Fernandes duopoly has broken the 5% barrier: Chelsea’s Joao Pedro at £7.6m. The Brazilian faces his former club, a narrative angle managers rarely ignore. If the ownership trends continue, he could easily be the most-selected player in FPL by the time that match kicks off.
That doesn’t yet make him a mainstream captaincy option on the scale of Haaland or Fernandes, but it does mark him out as the standout differential with genuine armband potential.
The decision point
The second “Captain Sensible” debate of the season boils down to a familiar tension. Do you follow the poll, lean into the security of Haaland and Fernandes, and accept that most of your rivals will do the same? Or do you ride the early form of Arsenal and Chelsea assets, chase upside, and risk watching Haaland erase your gamble with a routine brace?
The data, projections and models – Rate My Team included – will all be poured over in the final hours. Managers will compare expected points, fixture difficulty and underlying numbers, hunting for a clear edge that may not exist.
In the end, it comes back to one call: trust the proven premiums to correct last week’s wrongs, or let the form players crash the captaincy party in Gameweek 2.
