Chelsea Pursue Manu Kone Amid Enzo Fernandez Exit
Chelsea’s midfield rebuild is being drawn with thick, expensive lines – and one decision in Rome now threatens to redraw the entire Premier League landscape.
At the heart of it all: Enzo Fernandez and a £120m path to Manchester City.
Chelsea move for Kone as Enzo exit looms
Chelsea have accelerated their pursuit of Manu Kone, agreeing personal terms with the AS Roma midfielder as they scramble to put a replacement in place before opening the door for Fernandez to leave.
The club’s stance is clear. They will sanction Fernandez’s sale only if two conditions are met: a £120m fee, and a “worthy” successor secured first. City are prepared to make the Argentine the most expensive midfielder in football history and the costliest signing in their own history. Fernandez, for his part, is described as desperate to make the move.
That urgency has shifted the spotlight to Rome.
Reports from FootballTransfers claim Chelsea have already settled personal terms with Kone and are now pushing hard to strike a deal with Roma before the window slams shut. French journalist Santi Aouna backed that up, confirming that Chelsea have made official contact with the Italian club and that talks over the 25-year-old are ongoing.
The message from Roma, though, has been anything but welcoming.
Roma dig in as Chelsea test resolve
Italian journalist Nico Schira reported that Chelsea tabled an offer worth €65m (around £56m) for Kone. It is a bid that would test most clubs’ resolve, yet Roma coach Gian Piero Gasperini is said to consider the midfielder “non-transferable”.
That word matters. It signals a manager who sees Kone as a pillar, not a trading chip. But in modern football, “non-transferable” often lasts only as long as the player and owner agree.
Schira’s update was quickly followed by another twist. Gianluca Di Marzio described the move as an “advanced” deal between Chelsea and Roma, but at a lower figure than first suggested, citing a fee of around £52m. The structure may differ, the numbers may shift, but the direction of travel is unmistakable: Chelsea are closing in.
The decision now rests with Kone himself and Roma owner Dan Friedkin. Accept the money and reshape the squad, or hold the line and risk unsettling a key player who knows one of Europe’s biggest spenders wants him at the centre of their rebuild.
The domino that unlocks Enzo to City
This is not just a Chelsea story. It is a Manchester City story waiting to happen.
If Roma relent and Kone heads to Stamford Bridge, Fernandez’s path to the Etihad clears dramatically. Chelsea will have their replacement, their valuation is already set at £120m, and City’s need for another elite midfielder is no secret.
Lose Kone, and Roma bank a huge fee while handing Chelsea the final piece they need to cash in on Fernandez. Keep him, and Chelsea are left scrambling, with City forced to wait or turn elsewhere.
Right now, the entire saga hangs on one midfielder in Rome and one owner’s threshold for saying no. If that answer flips to yes, Enzo Fernandez to Manchester City stops being a possibility and starts looking like an inevitability.
