Chinese Basketball Star Ruled Out of National Team Duty
A key figure in Chinese women’s basketball has been ruled out of national-team duty by something no coach can prepare for: a missing passport.
After days of speculation over her absence, the player confirmed she will not link up with the China national team, explaining that her passport was lost in the mail and has yet to be recovered. Every avenue was explored, she said, but the clock beat them.
This is not a routine withdrawal. For years she has been one of the faces of China’s women’s program, a bridge between the domestic game, the Chinese Basketball Association and the wider international stage. By her own account, that bond has remained strong throughout her time overseas, with the CBA and the national setup providing consistent backing as her club career has unfolded abroad.
That is why this one stings. She spoke of always feeling “valued and wanted” in the national setup and described every call-up as “a tremendous honor.” This summer was supposed to be another chapter in that story. She was ready. She was excited. The suitcase was metaphorically packed.
Then bureaucracy collided with bad luck.
The passport, sent through the mail, vanished. No scan. No stamp. No trace. As days turned into weeks, the player, her representatives and the relevant authorities pushed for solutions, chasing every possible route to get her on that plane. None of it was enough. The document is still missing, and with it goes her chance to suit up for China this time around.
She did not hide her disappointment. Being forced to watch from afar, she admitted, hurts. Yet her message carried more gratitude than anger. She thanked those who checked in on her, those who tried to help, and everyone who continues to back Chinese women’s basketball.
There was no drama, no blame. Just a sober acceptance that “sometimes, disappointment is simply part of life,” and a clear statement that her commitment to the national team has not dimmed.
The timing is cruel for both player and country. China lose experience, leadership and proven quality on the international stage. She loses precious games in a national shirt, the kind that define careers and knit generations of teams together.
But she left her statement with a promise, not a farewell.
“See you on the world stage next time,” she said.
China will be counting on it.
