Derby County Secures First League Victory with Salvesen's Striking Goal

Derby County finally found the punch they had been missing, and Lars-Jorgen Salvesen delivered it with a strike that cut straight through the tension at Pride Park.

Winless and under scrutiny at the start of the season, the Rams needed something more than just effort. They needed a moment. It arrived when Salvesen stepped onto a loose ball and lashed it beyond the Portsmouth goalkeeper, a finish that screamed conviction rather than caution.

Former Derby midfielder Darren Robinson could only admire the technique.

"It was a quality finish in the way he came on to the ball and it was a confident finish," he said, summing up the strike that sealed a first league victory of the campaign.

Portsmouth had spent long spells peppering Derby’s goal from range, testing the back line without ever truly slicing it open. Shots flew from distance, the pressure mounted, the away end roared. But the precision wasn’t there.

"There were lots of shots from distance, particularly from Portsmouth, but they lacked that cutting edge," Robinson noted.

Derby, by contrast, made their key moment count. Salvesen didn’t snatch at the chance. He strode into it and drove his effort high, the ball still climbing as it ripped into the net. One clean hit, one decisive swing in momentum.

"You watch that finish by Salvesen," Robinson added. "He comes on to it and he absolutely thumps it – it was still rising as it hit the back of the net."

Timing mattered almost as much as the technique. Portsmouth had emerged from half-time with a snarl, upping the tempo and feeding off a growing sense of unease in the stands. The visitors’ response after the break had stirred the home crowd, but not in comfort.

"It was an important time to score because the crowd were building a bit of energy," Robinson said. "Portsmouth had given that reaction after half-time and that really burst the bubble."

Derby’s first win doesn’t erase the questions raised by their sluggish start, but Salvesen’s thunderous intervention changes the mood. From anxiety to applause, from murmurs to belief – one rising shot has given the Rams something solid to build on.
