Djed Spence Set for Inter Debut After World Cup Strain

Djed Spence has yet to kick a competitive ball for Inter, but his wait looks set to end as Serie A returns in October.

The English defender, signed from Tottenham in the summer for €35m, is expected to be available for Cristian Chivu’s side when Inter host Parma at San Siro on October 10, according to Gazzetta. For a club that invested heavily and a player fresh from a gruelling World Cup run with England, that date has been circled for weeks.

From World Cup strain to San Siro stage

Spence arrived in Milan with momentum and mileage. His World Cup campaign with England pushed him deep into July, his last major outing coming in the semi-final against Argentina in Atlanta, where he threw himself into challenges and defensive recoveries in a high-intensity contest.

That workload came at a cost.

Since landing in Italy, the 26-year-old has been kept on a tailored programme, training away from the main group to rebuild his match fitness. Inter’s staff have resisted the temptation to rush him, even as anticipation around his debut has grown. The sight of Spence in Nerazzurri colours at San Siro back in August, before the league clash with Monza, only heightened the sense of a story still waiting to start.

The club’s approach has been clear: get him right, then unleash him.

Chivu’s schedule opens the door

With Serie A paused for the international break, Chivu has handed his squad a full week off. Only after that breather will group sessions resume for those not on national team duty, with training set to restart on Monday.

Spence will spend this week still working separately, fine-tuning his condition. The plan, as reported, is for him to step back into full sessions with his teammates next week, giving him a crucial run of days to integrate tactically and physically before Parma arrive in Milan.

If all goes to script, Inter’s €35m summer signing will finally be ready to swap individual drills for the San Siro roar.
