Edvin Austbø Joins West Ham United with Big Ambitions
Edvin Austbø has walked into the London Stadium with a four-year contract in his pocket, the No35 shirt on his back and a clear message: he is here to help drag West Ham United back to the Premier League.
The 21-year-old Norwegian forward, signed with an option for a further year, spoke with the kind of wide-eyed conviction that tends to go down well in east London.
“It feels really good to be a Hammer,” he said. “Ever since I knew about the interest, I wanted to come here and have butterflies and am really looking forward to start playing for this amazing club.”
This is not a routine move for him. It is a leap. A young striker leaving home, stepping into a club that has just been jolted out of the top flight and is now under pressure to return at the first attempt. Austbø knows exactly what he is walking into.
“Obviously, the ambitions of the club are big and it's also for me as a player,” he said, leaning firmly into the scale of the challenge rather than dodging it.
The courtship was led by new head coach Nuno and West Ham’s Director of Player Recruitment, Nils Koppen, whose conversations with the player clearly hit the right notes.
“The talks I had with Nuno and Nils Koppen were amazing and I just felt from the start that this was a good match and that I really wanted to come here,” Austbø explained.
For him, this is also the fulfilment of a childhood habit. The Premier League beamed into Norwegian living rooms, West Ham’s claret and blue flickering across the screen.
“I watched English football on TV when I was a little kid. Everyone in Norway knows West Ham. It's such a big club and a club that belongs on the highest level in England.”
That last line will resonate in these parts. A club that “belongs” in the top tier, currently staring at the hard reality of the division below. Promotion is not a slogan this season; it is the job description.
Koppen, the man tasked with reshaping the squad, made it clear this was no impulse buy.
“Edvin is a player we have tracked closely for some time and we are very happy to bring him to West Ham United,” he said. “He has made very impressive progress and built strong experience in Norway, and there has been a lot of interest in him across Europe.”
West Ham believe they have moved early and decisively for a forward whose profile fits both the manager’s demands and the division’s demands.
“We believe he has the right attributes, strengths and potential to be successful in English football,” Koppen added. “He is a quick, energetic and intelligent player, who will bring another positive option to our attacking profile.”
Quick. Energetic. Intelligent. Those are not luxuries in a promotion fight; they are essentials. So is mentality, and internally the club is convinced Austbø has that too.
“Edvin is highly motivated to take this next step in his career, and everyone here at the Club will do everything we can to help him to settle in as quickly as possible.”
The contract is long, the belief is strong, and the expectations are immediate. Now it is over to the new No35 to turn childhood TV dreams into goals that matter in a season West Ham cannot afford to get wrong.
