Elgin Baylor's Legacy: Court Battle Over Inheritance

Elgin Baylor spent his life deciding games in the air. Years after his death, the battle over his legacy is being fought in courtrooms instead of arenas.

According to court documents, Baylor’s daughter, Alison Clayton, has filed a petition accusing her stepmother, Elaine Baylor, of keeping her in the dark about her inheritance and the details of the Hall of Famer’s estate.

Baylor died on March 22, 2021, at the age of 86. Alison claims she and her brother were not told their father had passed away at the time, alleging Elaine did not inform them of his death and has since refused to share any information about the estate.

In the filing, Alison says she moved to the East Coast in 1991 but maintained contact with her father until around 2018. She contends Elaine knew about that long-standing relationship, yet still chose to shut her out when it came to Baylor’s final affairs.

Elaine has not yet responded to the case.

The dispute casts a harsh light over the memory of one of basketball’s great innovators. A No. 1 overall NBA draft pick in 1958, Elgin Baylor played 14 seasons for the Lakers and carved out a place in the Basketball Hall of Fame, his name etched among the sport’s true giants.

Now, the fight is not over how he played, but over what he left behind — and who, in the end, gets to claim a share of his story.
