GB Boxers Shine in Sofia: Reid, Thomas, and Burton Claim European Medals
Great Britain’s boxers took some heavy blows in Sofia, but three of them refused to budge. By the end of a bruising day at the European Championships in Bulgaria, Chantelle Reid, Damar Thomas and Abdul Burton had all punched their way into the semi-finals – and guaranteed themselves at least bronze.
Reid in cruise control
In the women’s light-middleweight division, Chantelle Reid barely gave the judges anything to think about.
The 28-year-old Commonwealth Games silver medallist controlled every round against Ireland's Evelyn Igharo, gliding to a dominant 5-0 points win at the Asics Arena Sports Hall. Sharp, composed, and always half a beat quicker, Reid kept Igharo at the end of her punches and never let the contest turn messy.
Her reward is a last-four showdown on Wednesday with Serbia's Milena Matovic, and on this form, Reid will expect more than just a place on the podium.
Thomas powers through at super-heavyweight
If Reid’s victory was about finesse, Damar Thomas’s was built on sheer authority.
The 21-year-old super-heavyweight imposed himself on Georgia's Nikoloz Begadze and walked away with his own 5-0 verdict. Thomas used his size and timing to dictate the ring geography, backing Begadze up and landing the cleaner work when it mattered.
He now faces Mahammad Abdullayev of Azerbaijan in the semi-finals – a serious step up, but Thomas has already shown he belongs in this company.
Burton silences the home crowd
The loudest noise of the night came when Abdul Burton’s hand was raised.
Up against home favourite and Olympic bronze medallist Javier Ibanez, the 20-year-old Briton had to endure not only a high-class opponent but a partisan Bulgarian crowd roaring every punch Ibanez threw. Burton met it all head-on.
In a tight, tactical bout, he edged a 3-2 split decision, digging in when the momentum threatened to swing away from him.
"Sometimes you have got to dig in and when things went against me I had to get stuck in and show who I was," Burton said afterwards. "I am young, hungry and here to take over."
The win sets up a semi-final against Turkey's Semih Gumus and marks Burton out as one of the breakout stories of the tournament.
Mixed fortunes for a bruised GB squad
Behind the three medal-winners, the wider GB squad absorbed some painful exits.
Over half of Britain’s 15-strong team have now been eliminated, a reminder of the depth and danger across European boxing at this level.
On Tuesday, flyweight Ruby White pushed Olympic silver medallist Hatice Akbas hard but lost a narrow 3-2 decision to the Turkish star. There was no such margin for error in Emily Asquith’s light-heavyweight bout, the Briton suffering a 5-0 defeat to Ireland's Lisa O'Rourke.
In the men's heavyweight division, Commonwealth Games champion Isaac Okoh also saw his campaign ended, beaten 3-0 by Germany's Kevin Lebowski.
More chances to come
The story of GB’s week in Sofia is not finished.
Lauren Mackie, Amy Broadhurst, Callum Makin and Oladimeji Shittu are all due in quarter-final action on Wednesday, each with a chance to join Reid, Thomas and Burton on the medal list.
Three medals are already in the bag. The question now is how many more this hardened, battle-tested squad can drag out of a ruthless European stage.
