Gibbs-White Set for England Recall as Palmer Injured

Cole Palmer’s international resurgence has been checked again. Morgan Gibbs-White’s might just be about to begin.

According to BBC reports, the Nottingham Forest midfielder is set for an England recall for the upcoming Nations League fixtures, stepping in for Palmer, who is expected to withdraw with a minor injury.

It is a cruel twist for the Chelsea forward. He had just played the full 90 minutes in Friday’s 3-0 defeat at Brentford, another sign of his importance under Thomas Tuchel at club level. After a summer spent on the outside looking in following his World Cup omission, Palmer had forced his way back to prominence at Stamford Bridge, starting six of Chelsea’s seven games this season and producing four goals and two assists.

That form had finally pushed him back into the England picture. Tuchel brought him back into the senior squad with a clear challenge attached.

Before news of the injury, the England manager had been blunt: Palmer had a “point to prove”. He needed “to step up”, Tuchel said, if he wanted to “keep his shirt and justify the nomination.” This was meant to be Palmer’s chance to answer that call on the international stage, to turn club momentum into something bigger.

Instead, he is back on hold. His last England appearance remains the 1-0 friendly defeat to Japan in March, and that wait will now stretch on until he recovers.

Palmer’s fitness has hovered over his career for some time. A recurring groin problem disrupted his 2025-26 campaign, drawing public frustration from his then Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca, now in charge at Manchester City, who questioned how the situation had been allowed to drag on. Just as the narrative threatened to change, the conversation swings back to his durability again.

For Gibbs-White, the same development opens a door that had been left only slightly ajar.

Initially omitted from Tuchel’s squad, the 26-year-old was, by the manager’s own admission on Friday, “incredibly close” to making the final cut. His early-season form for Forest has been sharp: one goal, two assists in five league matches, and performances that have carried a certain authority between the lines.

This recall, if completed as expected, would be his first England involvement since October 2025, when he featured in a 3-0 friendly win over Wales. Back then, it felt like a first step. This now looks more like a second chance.

Brutal schedule, thin margins

Gibbs-White will walk into an England camp braced for an unforgiving stretch. Tuchel’s side face four matches in quick succession, a schedule that will test both the depth and resilience of his squad.

It starts in the most demanding way possible: World Cup winners Spain at Wembley on Saturday, 26 September. After that, England head to the Czech Republic on 29 September, then continue their travels with a meeting against Croatia on 3 October. The break closes back at home, with the Czechs visiting Wembley again on 6 October.

Across that run, Tuchel will need fresh legs and brave technicians. Palmer was supposed to be one of them. Now, the responsibility may fall to Gibbs-White to supply some of the creativity and incision England lose without the Chelsea man.

For Palmer, this is another painful pause in a story that has yet to settle. For Gibbs-White, it is an invitation: step in, step up, and make sure the next squad list leaves no room for debate.
