Groningen Crush PEC Zwolle 3-0 in Dominant Home Victory
FC Groningen did not just beat PEC Zwolle on Friday night. They pushed them around the Euroborg and sent them home with another bruise to an already fragile ego.
A sharp, disciplined Groningen side won 3-0, climbed to sixth, and left a shaken PEC hovering in 16th, still carrying the scars of that 0-7 humiliation against Feyenoord.
The visitors had arrived looking for a reaction. What they found instead was a Groningen team in no mood for charity.
From the first whistle, Dick Lukkien’s men dictated the tempo. Groningen pressed high, snapped into challenges, and moved the ball with purpose, while PEC Zwolle looked nervous, tentative, almost waiting for something to go wrong.
It did after 20 minutes.
Marco Rente stepped in from the back and split the PEC defence with a clever pass into Jorg Schreuders. The midfielder showed real composure, pausing just long enough to draw blue shirts towards him before rolling the ball back into space. Thom van Bergen arrived, side-footed calmly, and the Euroborg erupted. 1-0, and fully deserved.
That goal settled Groningen even more. They smelled weakness. PEC, still haunted by last weekend, retreated a yard too deep and started losing the ball in bad areas.
The pressure told again.
Ryan Thomas was caught in possession and Schreuders, already involved in the opener, pounced. One touch out of his feet, a stride into space, and then a clean strike with his supposedly weaker left from outside the box. The ball flew past the goalkeeper. 2-0, Groningen cruising, PEC sinking.
By half-time, the pattern was clear: Groningen confident and in control, PEC Zwolle clinging on and grateful the scoreline was not worse.
Only after the interval did the visitors finally offer a hint of resistance. A low cross from the left flashed into the Groningen penalty area and Gabriël Reiziger stretched to meet it, just managing a touch. For a split second, it looked like the lifeline they desperately needed. The ball drifted wide instead, and with it went any real sense of a comeback.
Groningen responded by tightening their grip again, managing the game with maturity. They kept PEC at arm’s length, closed down space, and waited for the next opening.
It arrived on 68 minutes, and it was worth the wait.
An indirect, rehearsed free-kick routine unfolded at the edge of the box. The ball was laid off and Tygo Land stepped onto it with total conviction, hammering a ferocious strike into the top corner. 3-0. A training-ground move executed perfectly under the lights.
From there, Groningen played with the authority of a side that knew the job was done. The passes became a little bolder, the attacks a little more expressive.
Van Bergen almost added a fourth and his second of the night when the ball dropped kindly to him in the area. He swung his left foot, but this time the finish lacked the precision of his opener and the chance went begging.
It did not matter.
The damage had long been done. Groningen walked off to warm applause, a team on the rise. PEC Zwolle trudged away again with more questions than answers, still searching for a way to stop the slide.
