India's Shooting Silver and MMA Bronze in Aichi-Nagoya
India’s Asian Games campaign in Aichi-Nagoya burst into life on Sunday, and fittingly, it began on the shooting range.
In the women’s 10m air rifle team event, the trio of Elavenil Valarivan, Sonam Uttam Maskar and Vidarsa K. Vinod delivered India’s first medal of the Games, a composed silver, with a combined score of 1898.0. China proved a class apart to take gold, but India’s shooters held their nerve to secure second place and set the tone for the delegation.
The story did not end there for Elavenil. Having anchored the team performance, she stepped back onto the line in the individual final and produced another assured display, finishing second once again. One day, two silvers. Her performance instantly doubled both her personal tally and India’s overall count, underlining her status as one of the country’s most reliable big-stage performers.
Mixed Martial Arts Success
On a different stage, in a different combat arena, India’s mixed martial arts contingent added another bright note. Suchika Tairyal advanced to the semifinals in the women’s traditional 60kg weight category, a result that guarantees at least a bronze medal under the tournament format. The color of that medal now rests on how far she can push through the final rounds, but the podium is already assured.
Host Nation's Achievement
Japan, as hosts, claimed a landmark of their own. Takumi Hojo secured the first gold medal of the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games 2026, winning the men’s triathlon on Sunday and giving the home fans an early reason to raise the volume.
Day one has delivered India early medals, a home hero for Japan, and a hint of the battles still to come as the Games begin to find their full stride.
