Ireland Player Jason Knight Says Match Against Israel Should Not Proceed
Jason Knight has become the first Republic of Ireland player to openly say that their upcoming match against Israel should not take place. His comments came after Ireland's 1-0 loss to Kosovo in Pristina, ahead of a squad discussion planned by captain Dara O’Shea regarding the contentious game scheduled for Sunday in Debrecen.
Controversy Surrounding the Fixture
This fixture is stirring strong emotions since it will be held again at a neutral venue for Ireland's home game, this time behind closed doors in Backa Topola, Serbia, on October 4. The match has sparked protests from groups like Stop The Game, calling for a boycott amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
UEFA has allowed Israel to continue competing despite findings by a United Nations independent commission accusing Israel of genocide in Gaza. This places players in a difficult position, as Knight shared.
"Look, it's difficult. The manager, Dara, and Nathan [Collins] spoke well about it. I don’t think the game should be going ahead but it is going ahead," Knight said. "We’ll have a deeper talk about it and what that means, we’ll get our thoughts as a group and go from there."
He described the situation as challenging and acknowledged the public debate in Ireland, while personally focusing on his Championship football in England. Knight mentioned prior discussions among players, especially senior ones, about how to handle the situation.
"We can have a really in-depth talk of what that means and what the consequences are. We’ll do that on Friday and go from there," he added.
Knight also expressed confidence in his ability to manage the pressure, aiming to balance his football focus with sharing his opinions when appropriate.
"I am quite experienced. None of us have gone through this scenario before but I’d like to think I’m experienced, thick-skinned, and can get through most things. I’ll try and focus on the football as much as possible," he said.
