Irish Boxers Shine at European Championships
Three Irish boxers punched their way into medal contention at the European Boxing Championships in Sofia on Saturday, on a night that underlined the squad’s depth – and its ruthlessness.
Jon McConnell, Daina Moorehouse and Lisa O'Rourke all booked quarter-final spots. Shannon Sweeney, battling to join them, fell just short.
McConnell keeps rolling
Jon McConnell looks like a man in form and in control.
Fresh from turning over Turkey's Necat Ekinci on Thursday, the Commonwealth Games gold medallist backed it up with another composed display, this time against Poland's Damian Durkacz in their last-16 bout.
He took a 4-1 decision, but the scoreline only tells part of it. McConnell dictated tempo, picked his moments, and rarely allowed Durkacz the kind of exchanges he wanted. When the Polish fighter tried to drag him into a scrap, McConnell stepped off, reset, and scored.
The 23-year-old now moves into Monday’s quarter-final against Italy's Gabriele Guidi Rontani, with a medal on the line and momentum clearly behind him.
Moorehouse edges home favourite
If McConnell’s win was measured, Daina Moorehouse’s was sheer nerve.
Drawn against Bulgarian favourite Zlatislava Chukanova in Sofia, Moorehouse walked into a charged arena and walked out with a split-decision victory – again. She had already beaten Chukanova in the Olympic qualifiers for Paris. She did it once more when it mattered.
The Wicklow fighter controlled the early going, using her movement and timing to frustrate the home boxer. The tension spiked in the final round when Moorehouse was forced to take a count, a moment that swung the crowd back into full voice and threatened to turn the tide.
She steadied herself, saw out the round, and the judges rewarded the body of work: 3-2 on the cards.
At 25, Moorehouse now steps into a serious test against Spain’s Laura Fuentes Fernandez, a World and European bronze medallist. That bout will decide whether this run becomes something more than a brave away performance.
O’Rourke announces her return
Lisa O'Rourke did not ease her way back into the ring. She stamped her authority on it.
The 2022 World champion returned with a statement win over Greece's Vasiliki Stavridou, taking a unanimous decision in their last-16 clash.
O’Rourke dominated the first two rounds, boxing with the assurance of someone who has been on this stage and expects to be there again. Jabs landed, combinations flowed, and Stavridou struggled to find any sustained success.
The Irish fighter then turned the screw in the final round, forcing two standing counts as she overwhelmed her opponent and cruised to victory. It was controlled aggression, the kind that sends a message across a tournament draw.
Next up is Team GB's Emily Asquith, with a medal at stake and a rivalry edge that needs no extra selling.
Sweeney falls at last-16 hurdle
For Shannon Sweeney, the margins were unforgiving.
She started brightly against Italian Chiara Mosetti but could not hold the advantage, losing the final two rounds and, with them, the bout. The judges scored it 4-1 to Mosetti, ending Sweeney’s campaign at the last-16 stage.
While her team-mates move on to medal fights, Sweeney’s route now runs through reflection and reset.
Three Irish boxers remain in the hunt, each now one win away from the podium. With McConnell, Moorehouse and O’Rourke all carrying form – and different shades of confidence – into their quarter-finals, the question in Sofia is no longer whether Ireland will medal.
