Jordon Ibe Fined for Assaulting Ex-Girlfriend

Jordon Ibe, once tipped as one of English football’s brightest young wingers, has been fined and ordered to complete community service after admitting assaulting his ex-girlfriend during a confrontation in south London.

The 30-year-old, who came through at Liverpool and later played for AFC Bournemouth, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm at Croydon Magistrates’ Court, having initially denied the charge in March.

Guilty plea and “serious mistake”

The court heard that Ibe attacked his former partner, Amie Mayson, outside her home in Lambeth in December, pulling a braid from her head and leaving a bald patch. Representing himself, the former England Under-21 international did not try to soften what had happened.

“I made a serious mistake,” he told the court. “I’ve had to look at myself in the mirror. I cannot change what I did but will take responsibility for what I do next.”

The incident unfolded on 14 December after an argument between the pair. Mayson confronted Ibe and demanded he repay money she said he owed her. Prosecutors said Ibe had arrived carrying a bag with drinks, snacks and flowers, but the mood turned sour when Mayson threw muffins to the ground and called him a “druggy”. At that point, Ibe grabbed her by the hair, tearing out the braid.

The relationship, Mayson said, had been “on and off” since late 2024.

Impact on the victim

In a victim impact statement read to the court, Mayson described the toll of the assault.

She said it had a “significant impact” on her “both physically and mentally”. Despite that, she told the court she still felt “compassion” for Ibe and that forgiveness formed part of her “healing journey”, even as “feelings of fear” remained.

The court imposed a financial penalty totalling £764, made up of a £114 surcharge and £650 in costs, alongside community service.

A career overshadowed

For Ibe, from Chislehurst in south-east London, the case marks another stark turn in a career that once promised so much.

He joined Liverpool in 2012, making 58 appearances in all competitions and being spoken of as a long-term attacking option at Anfield. Spells at Derby County and Birmingham City followed, before a £15m move to Bournemouth in 2016, where he played 92 times between 2016 and 2020.

Now, instead of talk about his pace or potential, Ibe finds his name in the headlines for an assault he openly calls a “serious mistake”. What he does next, as he told the court, will decide whether this becomes the full stop on his story in the game, or a grim chapter he manages to move beyond.
