Julián Álvarez Keeps Barcelona Dream Alive Despite Arsenal's Efforts
Arsenal did their part. They waited, they pushed, they tried to turn a door that was never really open. In the end, Julián Álvarez simply didn’t want to walk through it.
Across the final days of the transfer window, the Gunners held out hope that the World Cup winner might soften his stance. The plan was clear: tempt him back to the Premier League, sell him on a leading role in a title-chasing project, make London feel like the right next step.
He never bit.
Álvarez made it clear from the outset that there was only one club he truly wanted if he left Atlético Madrid: Barcelona. Arsenal kept calling anyway.
A transfer triangle with one closed route
The saga twisted when Atlético drew a line in the sand. They refused to sell Álvarez directly to Barcelona, unhappy with the Catalan club’s approach in trying to sign him. Strengthening a domestic rival was off the table. If the forward wanted out, it would not be straight to the Camp Nou.
That stance briefly opened a window for Arsenal. Atlético effectively presented Álvarez with two options: stay in Madrid or move to north London.
On paper, it was a fascinating dilemma. At Arsenal, he would have joined a squad already packed with attacking talent but still missing a truly versatile, high-end forward of his profile. He could play across the front line, press from the front, and give Mikel Arteta another gear in the final third. The kind of signing that can tilt tight title races.
Instead, he chose continuity. Álvarez opted to remain at Atlético, keeping his Barcelona ambition alive for another day rather than compromise now.
For Arsenal, that meant the collapse of one of their most coveted moves of the summer. For Atlético, it meant holding onto a key asset without empowering a direct rival at home or abroad.
Gerrard backs Atlético – and breathes easier
Not everyone in England is upset about Arsenal’s disappointment.
Steven Gerrard, speaking about the transfer wrangle, backed Atlético’s refusal to send Álvarez to Barcelona and made no secret of his relief that the forward did not end up at the Emirates.
“I understand his point of view, but Atletico Madrid don't want to strengthen a rival and be a feeder club to the teams you can compete domestically with and in the Champions League, so you can understand it from a club point of view as well.
“I'm just glad he didn't go to Arsenal, I'll just leave that one there!”
Gerrard’s reaction cuts to the heart of the issue. Álvarez is not just another name on a long list of targets. He is one of the most sought-after forwards in the game, a player whose arrival could have sharpened an already formidable Arsenal attack and nudged them closer to the very top of Europe’s hierarchy.
If a Liverpool legend is relieved he stayed away, that says plenty about how dangerous Arsenal might have become with him.
Arsenal move on, Álvarez keeps waiting
So Arsenal pivot. The window is shut, the squad is set, and the season rolls on without the Argentine they chased until the final stretch. The attack remains strong, but the “what if” lingers in the background: what would this side have looked like with Álvarez leading or rotating through the line?
Álvarez, meanwhile, stays in Spain, still wearing Atlético colours but with his eyes fixed firmly on Barcelona. Atlético have blocked the direct path for now, yet the forward’s preference has not changed.
The story pauses here, not ends. Arsenal must find another way to reach the next level. Álvarez will wait to see if Barcelona ever truly open the door.
