Julian Alvarez's Transfer Situation: Atletico Madrid vs Arsenal
Julian Alvarez has not set foot on Atletico Madrid’s training pitch since being told, behind closed doors, that his Barcelona dream is dead. For now, the only escape route left open runs through north London and Arsenal.
The message from Atletico was blunt. According to sources spoken to by BBC Sport, the club informed Alvarez and his representatives earlier this week that they will not even sit down with Barcelona over a deal for the Argentina international. No talks, no compromise, no softening of the stance.
The reaction has been immediate. Alvarez, 26, has missed two consecutive training sessions, officially citing illness. On paper, it’s a medical issue. In reality, it lands right in the middle of a transfer storm.
Atletico have not tried to cool the situation. They have poured fuel on it in public.
Within 24 hours, the La Liga club issued two separate statements spelling out their position: Alvarez will not be allowed to join Barca in the coming days. When Barcelona president Joan Laporta publicly insisted they still wanted the forward, Atletico fired back with a line that left no room for interpretation: “There is 0% chance of selling him to Barca.”
The board then went a step further. On Thursday, Atletico announced that every member of the club’s board of directors had “unanimously expressed their absolute support” for the decision not to negotiate Alvarez’s transfer to FC Barcelona. Internally and externally, the message is aligned. Barcelona are shut out.
Arsenal, though, are not.
While the Catalan door has been slammed, Atletico have quietly left another one ajar. The Spanish club are open to selling Alvarez to the Premier League champions and have already held direct talks over what would rank among the biggest transfers of the summer window.
Atleti director Mateu Alemany was in London last week. During that visit, he met Arsenal executives and made one thing crystal clear: this will not be a bargain. Atletico want 150m euros (£128m) for Alvarez.
That figure has not scared off Mikel Arteta. The Arsenal manager is pushing hard to bring Alvarez in before the window closes. He sees the Argentine as a transformative signing. Yet there is a problem he cannot coach his way around: Alvarez’s heart is set on Barcelona.
That loyalty to Barca’s interest has stalled Arsenal’s move, at least for now. The player’s stance has created a strange triangle: a club that won’t sell to Barcelona, a player who only wants Barcelona, and an Arsenal side ready to pay but waiting for the striker to look their way.
Even so, the tone between the two clubs has been strikingly positive. Discussions over a club-to-club agreement are understood to have progressed well. The framework is there, the numbers are on the table, and the relationship between Atletico and Arsenal is functional rather than confrontational.
Everything now hangs on one decision.
If Alvarez gives Arsenal the green light in the coming days, the deal is expected to accelerate quickly. The groundwork is laid. The fee is clear. The path is clean.
The question is whether the forward is willing to abandon the Barcelona dream and step into a different kind of spotlight at the Emirates.
