Justin Arana Joins Gilas Pilipinas for Clash with Iran

Justin Arana steps into the spotlight on Sunday, activated for Gilas Pilipinas’ clash with Iran in the fourth window of the 2027 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The Converge big man comes in as a direct replacement for Carl Tamayo, who hurt his ankle in the Philippines’ nerve-wracking 82-81 escape against Jordan in the opening game of the window. Tamayo’s setback opens the door for Arana’s long-awaited debut in the national colors.

Arana had already been in the pool before Gilas began its preparations for this window. Now he’s not just training; he’s in uniform and in the fight.

He joins a frontline that suddenly looks towering and crowded. Kai Sotto, June Mar Fajardo, and AJ Edu headline the interior presence, with Justine Baltazar and Troy Rosario also ready to grind in the paint. Arana adds another active, mobile body to that rotation, a fresh look for a frontcourt that will be tested physically by Iran.

On the wings, Kevin Quiambao, Dwight Ramos, and Chris Newsome bring length, versatility, and scoring from the perimeter. The backcourt belongs to Scottie Thompson, CJ Perez, and Juan Gomez de Liaño, who will orchestrate the offense and set the tone defensively.

Across the floor waits an Iranian side stung by a 93-91 defeat to New Zealand in its first outing of the window. A proud program, coming off a painful loss, with its World Cup path on the line.

Into that kind of game walks Justin Arana, finally wearing Gilas on his chest.
