Kate Koval Transfers to Baylor After Leaving LSU Amid War Impact
Kate Koval, a rising Ukrainian center who walked away from Louisiana State University over the signing of a Russian player, has landed at Baylor after receiving a rare transfer waiver from the NCAA.
The 20-year-old, who featured in all 35 of LSU’s games last season and averaged 8.3 points and 6.3 rebounds, had been listed as leaving for “personal reasons” after her freshman year in Baton Rouge. The truth was far heavier.
The turning point came when LSU added 17-year-old Russian prospect Anna Minaeva to its roster. Not long after that announcement, Koval’s departure was confirmed. Then she chose to explain why.
On Instagram, Koval laid out the reality behind her decision, tying it directly to Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine.
“My father serves in the Ukrainian military and takes tremendous pride in defending his country against Russian aggression,” she wrote. “For me, this war is not distant or abstract. People close to me have been killed and wounded in Russian attacks, and places where I grew up and first began playing basketball have been destroyed by missile strikes.
“The timing of this situation and the deep personal effect it has had on me, my family and those we care about who continue to live through and fight this war ultimately made me question whether LSU remained the right place for me.”
That was the backdrop when LSU approached the NCAA on her behalf. Student-athletes normally have to move within a strict transfer window, which closed in April. Stepping outside that calendar is only possible if the NCAA grants a waiver for “extenuating circumstances” or events unrelated to sport and beyond the player’s control, and those events must have occurred after the last chance to enter the transfer portal.
The request was successful. The waiver opened a door that would otherwise have been shut, clearing Koval to join Baylor in Texas and continue her college career without losing time.
Baylor gains a proven interior presence: a 6-foot-plus post who has already handled the grind of an SEC schedule and shown she can contribute on both ends of the floor. For Koval, it is more than a basketball move. It is a reset, a chance to play in an environment she feels can coexist with the reality of a war that has reached into her family, her hometown, and the gyms where she first picked up a ball.
BBC Sport has contacted LSU to clarify the exact terms under which the school requested the waiver.
