Katie Taylor's Farewell Fight with Westlife at Croke Park
Katie Taylor’s last walk to the ring at Croke Park will come with a soundtrack worthy of the occasion.
Westlife have been confirmed as the headline performers for Saturday night’s farewell fight, adding a layer of pop royalty to what is already one of the most emotional sporting nights Ireland has seen in years.
The Irish group will perform as part of the pre-fight and in-arena entertainment around Taylor’s final professional bout, a night that will culminate in her last ring walk in front of more than 80,000 fans. For the Bray fighter, it is the homecoming send-off she has long been promised. For Westlife, it is a return to a stadium they know as well as any stage in the world.
Taylor faces undefeated French contender Flora Pili as she bids to close out her career as a three-time undisputed world champion. The stakes are sporting history. The setting is pure theatre.
Westlife, speaking about the invitation, said they were “so honoured” to be asked by Taylor to be part of the occasion. “She has inspired the whole country and we couldn’t be prouder to perform for her at Croke Park, a stadium that also means so much to us,” the band said.
That line carries weight. Westlife are woven into Croke Park’s modern story. They have previously sold out six shows at the Dublin venue, turning the GAA cathedral into a sea of phones, voices and nostalgia. Their catalogue is built for big stages and bigger emotions: Flying Without Wings, Queen of My Heart, You Raise Me Up – songs that have followed Irish fans from teenage bedrooms to wedding dance floors and now, to a boxing farewell.
The numbers behind the band are as heavy as any title belt. More than 55 million records sold worldwide. Sixteen Irish No.1 singles. Fourteen UK chart-toppers. A quarter-century at the top end of pop.
Saturday’s appearance comes just days before they embark on a record-breaking 13-night residency at Dublin’s 3Arena, starting on 10 September, as part of their 25th anniversary celebrations. From Croke Park’s open sky to the 3Arena’s roof, it is a fortnight that underlines their enduring pull.
They will not be the only ones on the bill. Additional entertainment acts for Taylor’s farewell event are expected to be confirmed later this week, building out a programme that blurs the lines between major fight night and national celebration.
For those not lucky enough to secure a ticket, the occasion will still be hard to miss. Katie Taylor v Flora Pili will be shown live on RTÉ2 and RTÉ Player, with live radio commentary on RTÉ 2FM, while DAZN will carry the event to a global audience.
A champion bowing out at Croke Park. An Irish pop institution back on familiar turf. One last walk, one last fight, and a soundtrack the whole country already knows by heart.
