Kingspan Breffni Fire Forces Weekend Closure: Cavan GAA Investigates
Cavan GAA has begun an investigation after a fire broke out in the kitchen area of Kingspan Breffni Park in the early hours of Friday morning, forcing the closure of the county’s flagship ground for the weekend.
The blaze, which erupted after midnight, drew an emergency response from the fire brigade, who attended the stadium and extinguished the fire. No one was present at the time, and there were no injuries reported.
Early indications are that the damage has been confined to the kitchen section of the ground. Assessors spent Friday examining the scene, tasked with gauging the full extent of the structural and electrical damage and establishing the cause of the fire.
The impact is already being felt. Kingspan Breffni Park is currently without water and power, leaving the stadium out of commission at one of the busiest points in the club championship calendar.
Only hours before the incident, the ground had staged Crosserlough’s win over Laragh in the Cavan senior club football championship, another lively night under lights at a venue that has long served as the heartbeat of the county’s GAA activity.
That heartbeat has been abruptly stilled, at least temporarily. A slate of senior football championship fixtures scheduled for the venue this weekend has been uprooted: Ramor v Ballyhaise; Arva v Cavan Gaels; Cuchlainns v Kingscourt; Castlerahan v Gowna; and Killygarry v Mullahoran will all now be played at alternative grounds.
“Due to a major incident at Kingspan Breffni overnight, the venue is out of commission for the weekend.
“Thankfully nobody was injured but currently no power or water in the stadium. Further details will be shared once the full extent of the damage has been assessed. Thank you for your understanding.”
For now, the county board waits on reports from assessors and the fire authorities, and a ground that normally crackles with championship tension instead sits silent, its immediate future tied to the findings of that investigation.
