Kylian Mbappé: A Strong Case for the Ballon d'Or

Kylian Mbappé has never hidden from the spotlight. This week, he walked straight into the heart of football’s biggest individual debate and planted his flag.

The Real Madrid forward, one of the clear favourites for this year’s Ballon d’Or, made it plain: if he had a vote, it would go to himself.

Speaking to French outlet L’Équipe, with his words relayed by journalist Fabrizio Romano, Mbappé cut through the noise surrounding a race that has already split opinion across the game.

“Who would I vote for the Ballon d’Or? I’d vote for me. It is an individual award. We look at what the player has done individually,” he said. “When we look at the arguments… I look, and I say to myself that yeah… it wouldn’t be stolen.”

It is not an empty claim. Last season, Mbappé smashed through the 40-goal barrier in Real Madrid colours, then carried that form onto the biggest stage of all, breaking the all-time goalscoring record at the World Cup over the summer. In terms of raw output, few can touch him.

The counterpoint is obvious and has been repeated for months: goals without glory. Real Madrid finished the campaign without a major trophy. France did the same. In an era where the Ballon d’Or often tilts toward those who turn numbers into medals, that absence of silverware hangs over his candidacy.

Mbappé is unmoved. For him, the clue is in the name of the prize. Individual. Not collective. Not a reward for the best supporting cast or the most dominant club machine, but for the player who has bent matches to his will more than anyone else.

That conviction will not silence the debate. It will sharpen it. A season of staggering personal statistics, framed against a year of collective frustration, now collides with a player utterly convinced that the Golden Ball should still be his.

The votes will tell their own story in late October. Until then, Mbappé has made one thing unmistakably clear: if greatness is judged man against man, he believes he stands at the top of the game.
