Kylian Mbappé Reflects on His Journey to Real Madrid

Kylian Mbappé sat down in Madrid this week and, for the first time, pulled the curtain fully back on a transfer saga that has dominated a decade of his life. Behind the record-breaking move, the World Cup winner insists, there was one constant: Florentino Pérez.

“He’s the one who brought me here. We’ve stayed in touch for ten years before I arrived,” Mbappé told AS, detailing a relationship that long pre-dates the official announcement and the white shirt. This was not a last-minute sales pitch. It was a long game, quietly played from the president’s box.

A decade in the making

While Europe speculated, Pérez kept calling. Mbappé describes a president who never pushed too hard, but never disappeared.

“He always showed affection and understanding in the context of every decision made, both positive and negative for Real Madrid,” the forward said. Through rejected bids, late U-turns and political pressure in Paris, the Madrid president stayed on the other end of the line. “He always told me that one day I would play for Real Madrid, and here I am, and very happy.”

That single line, “we’ve stayed in touch for ten years,” ricocheted around social media once the interview dropped. It confirmed what many suspected: Real Madrid did not simply sign Mbappé in 2024. They invested in him, emotionally and strategically, for a decade.

Yet Mbappé is clear. Pérez may have been the architect, but the badge did the heavy lifting.

Destiny, not persuasion

“To be honest, nothing and no one has to convince you to come to Real Madrid,” he said, stripping away the mythology of transfer presentations and glossy pitches. For a boy who grew up with Madrid legends on his bedroom wall, the decision felt less like a negotiation and more like a delayed inevitability.

“In my history with Madrid, I wanted to come, but it wasn’t possible,” he admitted. “Ultimately, in football, there are moments and decisions that are beyond your control. In football, timing is key, and you have to wait for everything to be right before you can go.”

Those “moments” have been well documented: the failed moves, the dramatic turnarounds, the fury in Madrid and the celebrations in Paris. Mbappé doesn’t deny the emotional toll. He simply refuses to live in it.

“Of course, there’s disappointment, but a footballer’s life is about looking forward, not back,” he said. No lingering regret, no public apology tour. Just a line in the sand and a new chapter in white.

And for all Pérez’s influence, Mbappé insists even the most powerful man in Spanish football did not need to sell him the dream.

“No one had to convince me to come to Real Madrid, not even Pérez, as big a club as he is. It was obvious.” The message is blunt, almost ruthless: Real Madrid does not beg. It beckons.

He went further, framing the move as a step every great player must one day consider.

“If you want to be part of football history, one day you have to play for Real Madrid.”

A new life, a higher level

Since the unveiling, the focus has shifted from “if” and “when” to “how”. How would Mbappé adapt to a new country, a new league, a new level of scrutiny? So far, he sounds disarmingly at ease.

At Valdebebas, he has found what he calls a new sense of peace. The training centre, the city, the rhythm of Spanish life — all of it feels like a reset after the constant storm in France. The spotlight has not dimmed. It has intensified. But the environment, he suggests, suits him.

“I expected the best club in the world, to receive a lot of excitement from Madridistas all over the world,” he said. The welcome did not surprise him. The scale of the step up did.

“When I arrived here I already had a status, but when you are a Real Madrid player you move to another level, to a higher level.”

It is a striking admission from a player who already stood near the summit of the sport. World Cup winner. Global icon. Yet he speaks as if Madrid has shifted the ceiling again.

“I think that if you want to belong to the history of football, you have to go through Real Madrid,” he repeated, turning the club’s mystique into a kind of career obligation.

For a decade, the story of Kylian Mbappé and Real Madrid was about missed chances and near-misses. Now, with Pérez’s long pursuit finally complete and the No. 7 settled in the Spanish capital, the question flips.

If this is what he calls the “higher level,” what kind of history does he plan to write from here?
