Lazio Weigh Icardi and Bissouma as Gattuso Seeks Mobility
Lazio’s transfer window is technically closed. Their market, though, is not.
With two slots still free in the official Serie A squad list and a bench already stretched by injuries, the club have turned their gaze to the pool of free agents. Two names sit at the top of the discussion: Mauro Icardi and Yves Bissouma. Two very different answers to two very different questions.
Lotito tempted by Icardi gamble
President Claudio Lotito has never been shy of a headline signing, and the idea of Icardi in sky blue clearly appeals. According to Corriere dello Sport, via TuttoMercatoWeb, Lotito remains intrigued by the possibility of bringing in the former Inter striker, who is still without a club after leaving Galatasaray.
On paper, it is the kind of move that stirs a fanbase. Proven Serie A pedigree, a track record of goals, a name that still carries weight in Italy. Lazio have room in the squad, and the deal would not involve a transfer fee. For a club that must balance ambition with financial caution, the temptation is obvious.
Yet the pitch belongs to Gennaro Gattuso, and his vision cuts in a different direction.
Gattuso cool on Icardi as Pinamonti takes priority
Under the floodlights in Udine on September 7, Gattuso cut a familiar figure on the touchline: animated, demanding, relentless. That energy reflects the kind of centre-forward he wants.
When he arrived, Gattuso asked specifically for a more mobile central striker to spearhead his system. Lazio answered late in the summer with Andrea Pinamonti, a forward who can press, run channels, and link play. The coach now wants time and space to build around him.
Icardi, for all his instinct in the box, offers a very different profile. Gattuso is understood to be far less enthusiastic about the idea of reshaping his attack around a penalty-area poacher at this stage. For him, Icardi is not a necessity but a low-priority option, a possibility rather than a plan.
The focus, for now, is on getting Pinamonti fully match-fit and integrated. Any move for Icardi would have to fit that hierarchy, not disrupt it.
Bissouma enters frame as midfield cover
While the debate over Icardi taps into questions of style and identity, the interest in Yves Bissouma is more pragmatic.
The former Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton midfielder has emerged as a potential target as Lazio deal with injuries in the heart of midfield. Gattuso’s system leans heavily on intensity and balance in the middle of the park; every absence there is felt quickly.
Bissouma, available as a free agent, offers experience from the Premier League and a profile suited to plugging gaps, adding legs, and shoring up a department that has taken some recent hits. He would not arrive as a luxury piece, but as reinforcement for a coach who builds from the engine room.
No rush in Rome
Despite the open squad spots and the noise around two high-profile names, Lazio are not sprinting into decisions. The club are prepared to wait, to monitor fitness, form, and the evolving needs of Gattuso’s side before committing to either option.
The market may be closed, but the season is not. With Icardi’s goals and Bissouma’s energy both within reach, the real question is simple: will Lazio chase the name, or back the project Gattuso is trying to build?
