Leeds Appeal Over Disputed Goal After Newcastle Win
Leeds United’s 4-1 dismantling of Newcastle on Monday night has rolled into midweek with a very modern twist: an appeal over who actually scored one of the goals.
The flashpoint came in the 34th minute. Leeds were already in control when James Justin whipped in a cross from the right. Dominic Calvert-Lewin attacked it, powered his header towards goal and wheeled away believing he had doubled the lead. On the stadium screens, it looked his all the way.
Not for long.
Replays suggested Jayden Bogle might have got the faintest of touches, just enough to divert the ball on its way in. After review, the strike was officially taken off Calvert-Lewin and handed to Bogle, with the Premier League’s goal accreditation panel ruling it a Bogle goal.
Calvert-Lewin, who later did get on the scoresheet in his own right with Leeds’ third in first-half stoppage time, was visibly stunned when the referee informed him that his earlier effort had been reassigned. A centre-forward’s instinct told him it was his. The record books, at least for now, say otherwise.
The Premier League match centre confirmed on X that “the goal accreditation panel adjudged Leeds’ 34th minute goal as a Bogle goal”, underlining the decision that left the striker short of what he thought was a first-half brace.
Leeds have not let it lie. The club have formally submitted an appeal over the accreditation of that second goal, challenging the initial verdict and pushing for it to be awarded to Calvert-Lewin.
A second, separate panel will now be convened to pore over the footage again and deliver a final ruling on who gets credit. One touch, two names, and a decision that will quietly matter to both players’ season tallies.
The scoreline will not change. The argument over whose goal it was most certainly will.
