Liverpool Closing in on Bradley Barcola Transfer

Liverpool are closing in on the kind of transfer that changes the temperature of a season.

An agreement in principle is in place with Paris Saint-Germain for Bradley Barcola, a deal worth around £120million (€140m) with more than £100m guaranteed.

The paperwork is not signed, the lawyers are still earning their money on Thursday, but the direction of travel is clear: Liverpool have found their man to follow Mohamed Salah.

This has been a heavyweight negotiation. On Liverpool’s side, sporting director Richard Hughes, CEO Billy Hogan and Fenway Sports Group president Mike Gordon have driven the talks. Opposite them, PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has been directly involved. That level of engagement tells its own story about how highly both clubs value the 23-year-old.

The breakthrough came after key talks on Tuesday, when Liverpool and PSG finally brought clarity to a saga that has rumbled through the summer. Barcola, for his part, has been fixed on Anfield. He has made it clear he wants the move, and that conviction has helped drag the deal towards the finish line.

PSG have known this was coming. Barcola has two years left on his contract but has refused to extend with the European champions. He was left out of the squad entirely for their Ligue 1 opener, a 2-2 draw with Rennes on Sunday, a selection call that underlined how far the relationship had shifted.

It is not as if he has been buried in Paris. Barcola has had to scrap for minutes with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Desire Doue, especially on the left, but he still forced his way into 49 games last season. Thirteen goals, seven assists, another Ligue 1 title and a second straight Champions League crown for Luis Enrique’s side. Those are serious numbers for a player often introduced from the bench in the latter stages of Europe.

Stretch the lens back further and the picture looks even more convincing. Since breaking into the first team in 2021-22, the Lyon academy graduate has stacked up 39 goals and 37 assists in 152 appearances. That output, at his age, explains why Liverpool were prepared to wait, and then pay.

His summer only strengthened their resolve. Barcola played in all eight of France’s World Cup matches, scoring three times and looking completely at ease on the biggest stage. A winger who thrives in chaos, but thinks clearly inside it.

Liverpool see him primarily as Salah’s long-term heir, but not a carbon copy. Barcola operates mostly from the left, cutting in with pace and aggression, yet he is comfortable on the right as well. He carries the ball, commits defenders, and forces backlines to retreat. He is the kind of wide forward who changes the body language of both teams as soon as he receives possession.

That is exactly what Andoni Iraola has been waiting for.

The new Liverpool head coach wants a front-foot, high-tempo side, and he has been short of one more electric wide option to make the system truly bite. If this deal is completed as planned, he gets a winger who fits his blueprint: quick, direct, fearless, and productive.

The knock-on effects will ripple through the squad. Cody Gakpo’s future now comes into sharper focus. He has been repeatedly linked with Tottenham Hotspur and has drawn interest from Manchester City this summer. Liverpool have not made a final call, but the arrival of a £100m-plus forward in his zones of the pitch inevitably shifts the internal conversation.

For supporters, this is the jolt they have been craving. The window has drifted without that one marquee move to ignite belief. Barcola is the name they pinned their hopes on once it became clear Liverpool would need to plan for life after Salah. Now, after weeks of manoeuvring, that plan is almost on the table.

Nothing is done until signatures are in place and medicals are passed. Everyone involved knows that. But the shape of Liverpool’s attack for the next era is starting to come into view — and it has Bradley Barcola running right through the heart of it.
