Liverpool Sign Bradley Barcola: A Strategic Move in the Transfer Market
Liverpool have their man. And it’s a statement.
Bradley Barcola is on his way to Anfield, with Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain having finally thrashed out an agreement for the French winger after weeks of hard pursuit. The deal, revealed by The Athletic’s David Ornstein and sealed with Fabrizio Romano’s trademark “here we go”, pushes Liverpool deep into the top end of the transfer market – and throws Cody Gakpo’s future straight into the spotlight.
Barcola: Liverpool land their top wide target
Liverpool have chased Barcola for a long time and made him their priority for the left flank. This was not an opportunistic move; this was a plan brought forward.
Romano confirmed that Liverpool and PSG have agreed a deal in principle, with the paperwork now being prepared and passed between legal teams. Once the documents are checked and signed off, Barcola will be cleared to travel for his medical and to sign his contract on Merseyside.
The numbers are huge. Liverpool will pay a guaranteed £100m, with PSG sources indicating they expect to receive around €140m in total once add-ons are triggered. A blockbuster fee for a winger Liverpool had originally targeted for the summer of 2025, accelerated into the present.
There had been noise from France and England that Barcola would not be leaving PSG at all, that he was “not for sale”, that only something absurd – figures like €170m – would even start a conversation. Liverpool never walked away. They waited, pushed, and kept their line.
Now they have one of the most coveted wide forwards in Europe. Barcola gets the move he wanted, Liverpool get the winger they wanted, PSG get the money they wanted. For all three parties, this is clean business at the very top of the market.
The Gakpo question
Big arrivals always have consequences. At Liverpool, the obvious one wears No. 18.
Cody Gakpo’s position at the club is under sharper scrutiny than ever, with the Barcola deal dropping into a window already full of speculation around the Dutchman. Tottenham have been circling. Manchester City are now in the frame as well.
Romano reports that both clubs are in constant contact to understand Gakpo’s situation. Tottenham already have an agreement with the player, while his representatives are also in talks with City. The forward is no longer just a name on a shortlist; he is a live option for two of Liverpool’s direct domestic rivals.
Liverpool, for their part, have been working on a contingency plan. They have lodged bids for Yankuba Minteh, only to see them rejected, and have made enquiries over Ismaila Sarr. Those moves are not random; they are part of a clear decision tree built around one simple hinge point.
If Gakpo goes, Liverpool will move for a second winger on top of Barcola. If he stays, they are prepared to go into the season with the current attacking group plus their new marquee signing.
So the next step is obvious. All eyes turn to Gakpo. Tottenham are there. Manchester City are there. Liverpool wait, knowing that one decision from the Dutch international could trigger another major move before the window closes.
Barcola is coming. Whether Gakpo is still there to greet him at Anfield is now the question that could reshape the Premier League’s attacking landscape in the final days of the summer.
