Liverpool in Talks with Valencia for Harvey Elliott Loan
Liverpool are in talks with Valencia over a loan move for Harvey Elliott as the transfer window heads into its final stretch before Tuesday night’s deadline.
The 23-year-old, who has attracted interest from several clubs over the summer, is now the subject of concrete negotiations with the La Liga side, who are pushing to get a deal done before the 11pm cut-off on September 1.
Elliott is understood to have spoken directly with Valencia head coach Carlos Corberan about his potential role at Mestalla, with the Spanish club keen to offer him the regular football that has eluded him over the past year. Any loan agreement is expected to be aligned with Liverpool’s desire to protect his market value, with a contract extension on Merseyside a possible part of the wider plan. His current deal runs until the summer of 2028.
The attacking midfielder has yet to feature in a match-day squad under new Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola and comes off a frustrating spell at Aston Villa, where he spent most of last season on the fringes.
His campaign was effectively shaped 12 months ago. A late cameo in Liverpool’s dramatic 3-2 win at Newcastle meant Elliott had already played for two clubs by January, closing off any prospect of another move in the winter window under FIFA rules.
Villa, mindful of the obligation to buy that would have been triggered after 10 appearances, managed his minutes carefully. He never reached that milestone, and while Unai Emery’s side went on to lift the Europa League, Elliott remained on the periphery, the £35m permanent clause never coming into play.
Back at Liverpool for the pre-season tour of the United States, Elliott cut a reflective figure. Speaking in New York after a 1-0 win over Wrexham on July 30, he admitted he was wrestling with his next step.
“I think I need to be more kind of cautious of my decisions,” he said. “Ultimately, I'm still wanting to be selfish, within that aspect of doing what's right for me, and whether I'm staying here and fighting for my place, or whether that's potentially going elsewhere, I'm still unsure at this moment in time until I get some more intel."
Liverpool had been expecting Valencia to firm up their interest before the weekend. Those conversations have now advanced into direct talks over a loan agreement as the clock ticks down.
Elliott, who joined his boyhood club from Fulham in the summer of 2019, has already amassed 149 appearances in red. The next move will decide whether that total is merely paused, or whether a season in Spain becomes the springboard to finally turn promise into prominence.
