Lowe Napalan Reveals Struggles in Supporting Raygun Gunn Before Olympics
Australian Breaking Association president Lowe Napalan has admitted he could barely work with Raygun Gunn in the crucial build-up to the Olympics, revealing his administrative load for Australia’s campaign left her with minimal high-performance coaching support.
“I was doing a lot more administrative work,” Napalan said, as reported by the Daily Mail. “In terms of Raygun’s training specifically, I was only there assisting a handful of times.” He estimated he attended fewer than 10 sessions.
The revelation underlines just how isolated Gunn’s preparation became. Napalan said he had little contact with her in the final months before the Games and did not see her completed routine until shortly before she stepped onto the Olympic stage.
When he finally did, the routine caught him off guard. In the documentary episode, Napalan recalls being surprised by what he saw and struggling to hide his reaction while watching from the side of the stage.
With Napalan pulled away by off-floor duties, much of Gunn’s training fell to her husband, fellow breaker Samuel Free. That arrangement, and Gunn’s performance in Paris, ignited a wave of online criticism after the Games. Detractors questioned both their qualifications and pushed conspiracy theories suggesting the pair had somehow manipulated the qualification process, according to the Daily Mail. The couple strongly deny those claims in the film.
Gunn, speaking candidly, accepts that she went to the Games knowing she was some distance behind the world’s elite in terms of technical skill. She also makes it clear that walking away was never a serious option.
“I don’t like to have regrets and I think that I knew deep down if I walked away, I would have regretted it more,” she said.
The backlash has been fierce and often personal, but it has not driven her out of the scene. Gunn insists she remains committed to breaking and plans to keep competing, determined to shape her legacy on the floor rather than online.
