Manager of the Month: Jones, Matos, Peixoto, Stephan Lead the Charge
Four managers, one statement month. The Championship’s first Manager of the Month shortlist of the season has the feel of a changing of the guard as Nathan Jones, Vitor Matos, Cesar Peixoto and Julien Stephan all muscle their way into the early conversation.
Jones fires Charlton to the summit
Nathan Jones has wasted no time at Charlton Athletic. Three games, three wins, and top spot in the table to show for it. It’s the kind of start that doesn’t just settle a dressing room, it jolts a division into taking notice.
Charlton’s perfect August under Jones has been built on clarity and aggression, a side playing like it knows exactly what it is. Nine points from nine is the cleanest argument a manager can make in the opening month, and Jones has delivered it without a stumble.
Matos makes Swansea hard to beat
Down in South Wales, Vitor Matos has chosen a different route to early credibility: control and calm. Swansea’s new boss guided his side through August without defeat, collecting seven points from their first three fixtures.
Those points were not padded by soft touches. Wins over Stoke City and Derby County gave Matos instant credibility against seasoned Championship opposition. Swansea look organised, confident and, crucially, unbeaten. For a new manager in this division, that’s gold dust.
Peixoto starts Wolves’ reset
At Wolves, Cesar Peixoto has walked into a club with one clear demand: go back up. An immediate return to the Premier League is the brief, and his first steps towards that target have been assured.
Like Swansea, Wolves banked seven points from their opening three matches of the campaign. It’s a solid, purposeful start for Peixoto in his first season in charge, the kind of opening that suggests Wolves intend to live near the top end of the table rather than merely talk about it.
Stephan steadies and sharpens QPR
QPR, under Julien Stephan, have quietly pieced together one of August’s most impressive records. No defeats, a renewed edge, and crucially, a toughness away from home that has too often deserted them in recent seasons.
Stephan oversaw eye-catching victories on the road at Portsmouth and Blackburn Rovers, results that hint at a side growing in resilience as well as ambition. An unbeaten month gives QPR a platform they have rarely enjoyed in recent campaigns.
Four managers, four unbeaten or near-perfect stories, one award. On Friday, 11 September, only one of Jones, Matos, Peixoto or Stephan will walk away with the first Manager of the Month trophy of the season. The others will have to settle for something more important: the sense that their teams are already moving in the right direction.
