Manchester City Nears Agreement for Enzo Fernandez Transfer

Manchester City have struck an initial agreement with Chelsea for Enzo Fernandez, pushing a headline-grabbing deal to the brink just hours before the transfer window shuts.

Club officials from City finally sat down for direct talks with their Premier League rivals on Monday, according to British outlet The Sun, breaking the deadlock over the 25-year-old midfielder and accelerating negotiations into the final stretch of deadline day.

Now it’s a race against the clock. Fernandez must complete every formality before the window slams shut at 11pm local time.

Reunion in the Etihad spotlight

If the move goes through, the World Cup winner will reunite with a familiar figure in Manchester. Enzo Maresca, the man who once coached him at Chelsea, is now in the Etihad dugout after succeeding Pep Guardiola in the summer.

For Fernandez, the transfer would offer more than just a fresh start. It would reconnect him with a coach he publicly backed and whose departure from Chelsea he openly criticised earlier this year.

Back in January, when Maresca was dismissed by the Chelsea hierarchy, Fernandez did not hide his frustration. “I don't understand it,” he told Mexican network TUDN. “Sometimes there are things we don't understand as players, and how and in what way they try to manage matters.”

He went deeper, underlining how hard the decision had hit the dressing room. “Clearly it was a departure that hurt us a lot, especially in the middle of the season, as it cuts everything off suddenly.

“We had an identity. He gave us a system, although according to the nature of football, things are sometimes good and sometimes bad. But he always had a very clear identity when it came to training and playing.”

Those words now hang over this transfer. The midfielder who felt the club had lost its way without Maresca is on the brink of following him to Manchester.

Silence at Chelsea, clarity at City

Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio has confirmed that City have reached an initial agreement with Chelsea, clearing the way for the next steps. Fernandez is now waiting for the official green light to undergo his medical and finalise the switch.

At Stamford Bridge, the mood is very different: controlled, quiet, and noticeably cautious.

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso left Fernandez out of the squad for Sunday’s clash with Brighton, a decision that only fuelled speculation over the Argentine’s future. The club offered no public explanation, and Alonso chose his words carefully when asked if Fernandez had already played his last game for the London side.

“We’ll see. We want what's best for the team, which is why we made the decision against Luton and today, and anything that happens before Tuesday evening, we need to be aware of how things will develop,” he said.

He refused to commit to any outcome, but he did send a message about the squad’s resilience beyond the window. “We're not sure, we're preparing for all scenarios, but I'm certain that whatever happens from Wednesday, we'll have a good enough squad to compete in all the Premier League matches.”

For Chelsea, that sounds like acceptance. For City, it sounds like opportunity.

Against the deadline

The situation now is stripped down to its essentials. Agreement in principle? Reached. Player willing? Evidently. Manager at the destination club? Someone he trusts and rates.

What remains is time.

Medical tests, paperwork, signatures, registrations – all must fall into place before the 11pm cut-off. One delay, one missing document, and the whole move risks collapsing in the final straight.

If City get it done, Maresca will have landed a midfielder who not only suits his ideas but has already bought into his methods. If they don’t, Chelsea will be left with a player whose future has been publicly questioned and whose admiration for his former coach is now leading him towards Manchester.

The clock is ticking. Which badge will Enzo Fernandez be wearing when it stops?
