Manchester United's Search for Striker: Alexander Sorloth Considered

Manchester United’s late-window hunt for a centre-forward has taken a familiar Nordic twist, with Atletico Madrid striker Alexander Sorloth offered to the club in the final days before the deadline.

Intermediaries have put the Norway international on United’s table, and he has quickly emerged as a serious option as the club scrambles to add another genuine No.9 before Tuesday’s cut-off.

A Premier League return on the cards

Sorloth, 30, is open to leaving Atletico this summer. A return to the Premier League appeals, not least because he has unfinished business in England after his previous spell with Crystal Palace.

United’s need is clear. Joshua Zirkzee has been allowed to join Fiorentina, leaving Michael Carrick and the recruitment team short of depth behind Benjamin Sesko. The brief is specific: if United bring in another striker, it has to be someone who can play centrally, offer a different profile to Sesko, and handle the physical demands of English football.

Sorloth ticks those boxes. Since moving to Atletico, he has impressed with his size, aerial power and penalty-box presence. Add in his prior Premier League experience and a career haul of 175 goals in 475 matches, and it is no surprise his name has moved up United’s list.

Atletico’s stance and a crowded striker market

Atletico are prepared to sanction Sorloth’s exit, but only on their terms. The Spanish side will let him go if, and only if, they secure a suitable replacement.

They intend to keep Julian Alvarez, who remains central to their plans, but Diego Simeone still wants another striker through the door. Arsenal’s Gabriel Jesus and former Lille forward Jonathan David are among the options under consideration as Atletico feel their way through a complex market.

Juventus are also circling around David. The Italian club are exploring a potential deal that could involve David heading to Turin with Sorloth and Nico Gonzalez moving in the opposite direction. Those talks, though, are becoming tangled, with multiple moving parts and no straightforward agreement in sight.

Amid all that, United’s name keeps popping up. David, TEAMtalk understands, has also been offered to Carrick’s side, who are weighing up whether the Canadian could be another solution in attack.

Mateta, Matanovic and the alternative routes

Sorloth is not alone on United’s shortlist.

The club have held talks with Crystal Palace over Jean-Philippe Mateta and Ismaila Sarr, though neither deal is simple. Palace are under no pressure to sell, and any agreement would require careful negotiation.

United have also cast the net younger. Freiburg’s Igor Matanovic, Hoffenheim’s Fisnik Asllani and RB Leipzig’s Conrad Harder have all been discussed internally as potential long-term projects rather than immediate headline acts.

For now, Sorloth sits in a different category: experienced, available under the right conditions, and keen on a return to England. That combination makes him one of the more realistic options as the window ticks into its final stretch.

Haaland connection and United’s tightrope

There is another layer of intrigue. Sorloth is a close friend of Manchester City star Erling Haaland, his international team-mate with Norway. The prospect of the pair sharing the same city, but on opposite sides of its fiercest divide, adds a storyline that would write itself.

United, though, cannot afford to be distracted by narratives. Inside Carrick’s camp, the message is consistent: they will not sign a striker just for the sake of it. Any arrival must complement Sesko, not simply crowd the squad.

If the right profile does not materialise, there is a genuine chance United walk away without adding another forward.

With the clock running and options narrowing, the question is simple: does Alexander Sorloth become the powerful Plan B United have been searching for, or another name that slips through in a window full of near-misses?
