Manchester United Signs Liverpool's Isaac Konde in Bold Academy Move

Manchester United have struck a deal to sign 16-year-old Liverpool midfielder Isaac Konde, prising one of the most highly regarded youngsters out of their rival’s academy in a move that underlines a sharp new edge to United’s youth recruitment.

The agreement, reported by Fabrizio Romano, comes after United completed the formalities over the past 24 hours. Konde has featured six times for Liverpool in the Under-18s Premier League this season, registering one assist and catching the eye with performances that quickly pushed him towards the front of the youth talent queue at Kirkby.

Now he is heading for Old Trafford instead.

United reshape the academy – exits and a statement capture

This is not an isolated signing. It lands in the middle of a period of churn at Carrington, with United aggressively reshaping their youth structure after a string of departures.

Arsenal, the reigning Premier League champions, moved in the summer to take Habeeb Ogunneye and James Scanlon on permanent deals, two losses that stung United and highlighted the growing competition at academy level among England’s elite.

Louie Bradbury followed them out of the door. The 17-year-old striker joined Stoke City on a permanent deal, signing a two-year contract with an option for a further year through the 2028/29 campaign. For a player who had steadily climbed through the ranks, it marked a clean break and a chance to build a senior career away from the glare of Old Trafford.

United’s statement on Bradbury underlined the club’s pride in his development. The Shrewsbury-born forward arrived at Under-14s level, earned his scholarship in 2025, and went on to make five appearances for the Under-18s in the 2024/25 season, including a late substitute debut in the FA Youth Cup fourth round under Adam Lawrence. Last season he hit eight goals in the Under-18 Premier League and added contributions in Premier League 2, a clear sign of his upward trajectory.

Then he was gone. United wished him well. And turned straight back to the market.

Konde in, Page blocked – a new edge to youth recruitment

United’s pursuit of young talent has not stopped at Konde. The club also pushed to sign Leicester City teenager Louis Page, a highly rated prospect at a League One side that has no intention of becoming a feeder. Talks dragged, time ticked away, and the deadline arrived without an agreement. Page stayed at Leicester, United left frustrated.

That failed move adds extra weight to the Konde deal. When one door stayed shut, United forced another open – at Liverpool of all places.

Stealing a 16-year-old midfielder from a direct rival is more than a footnote in the academy pages. It is a signal. United, having seen players lured away by clubs like Arsenal, are now ready to return the favour, targeting emerging talent wherever they find it, even inside another giant’s system.

For Konde, the switch offers a fresh pathway and a different stage. For United, it is another piece in a wider rebuild of their youth ranks, one that has already seen promising prospects depart and new faces arrive.

The question now is simple: in a Premier League era where academy battles are as fierce as those under the floodlights, who will win the next tug-of-war for the stars of tomorrow?
