Marcus Rashford's Tattoo Journey: The Meaning Behind His Shirt Numbers
Marcus Rashford has added two more shirt numbers to the story written across his skin.
The Manchester United forward has had 14 and 9 inked, according to Manchester-based tattoo artist Dale McGovern, joining the already familiar 39, 19 and 10 that chart his rise from academy hopeful to global star.
Each number is a timestamp in his career. None of them are accidental.
The new No. 14 nods to his spell at Barcelona, the first time he stepped away from Old Trafford and into life abroad. In Catalonia, 14 sat between his shoulder blades as he helped Barça to a La Liga title and the Spanish Super Cup, a short but decorated chapter that demanded its own place in the mural.
No. 9 tells a different part of the journey. Rashford wore it at Aston Villa, leading the line in claret and blue before returning to Manchester United with the same number on his back. It has since become the fourth shirt number he has used for the club, another marker in an evolving relationship with the centre-forward role and the expectations that come with it.
From 39, the raw debutant’s tag, to 19, to the iconic 10, and now 14 and 9, Rashford’s body has become a running archive of his career. Every digit is a reminder: where he started, where he wandered, what he won, and the numbers that defined him along the way.
The visuals of this numbered journey have been brought to life with the help of Jersey Story, but the script itself is Rashford’s – written in goals, trophies, and now ink.
