Mikel Arteta Signs New Contract with Arsenal
Arsenal’s architect of revival is staying put.
Mikel Arteta has reached agreement on a new, improved contract with the Premier League champions, a deal that will keep him at the heart of the club’s project well into the next decade of his association with the Gunners.
His existing contract was due to expire at the end of this season, and negotiations have been rumbling on for months. The mood around the talks always felt calm rather than frantic, and earlier this month it emerged that all sides were close to an agreement. Now that agreement is in place.
The exact length of the new deal has not been confirmed, but it is expected to carry Arteta through at least his 10th year at the club, after he first walked back through the doors at Emirates Stadium as head coach in December 2019. What began as a bold gamble on a rookie manager has hardened into a long-term commitment to the man who has delivered the title back to north London.
The contract reflects that shift. Arteta’s new terms include a significant pay rise on his current £10m-a-year salary, with an additional £5m in bonuses also built into the package. Arsenal have moved to pay their manager at the level of his achievements.
For Arteta, the decision has never sounded complicated. Asked last week about the state of the talks, he cut through any speculation with a clear message to supporters: “They [the fans] don't have to worry about any of that because I want to be here. I'm extremely happy and I feel very grateful to work with the people I work with.”
Those words now have a contract behind them. The manager who reshaped Arsenal in his image will carry on leading the champions, and the club’s next chapter will be written with the same hand that started this resurgence.
