Mohamed Salah's Historic Transfer to Trabzonspor
He turned his back on the money of Saudi Arabia and the UAE and walked straight into the noise of Papara Park.
Mohamed Salah to Trabzonspor. In Turkey, they are already calling it a transfer that bends the history of the league.
Salah chooses the cauldron over the cash
On Sunday night, Papara Park stages one of Turkish football’s oldest arguments: Trabzonspor against Galatasaray in the sixth round of the Trendyol Super League. It is a fixture that rarely needs extra fuel.
This time, it has Salah.
Trabzonspor come into the game in ninth place on 7 points, still trying to find their balance in front of their own crowd. Galatasaray arrive as league leaders, almost flawless with 13 points from a possible 15, already eyeing daylight at the top.
Terim: “One of the most important transfers in history”
Fatih Terim has seen almost everything in Turkish football. Titles, crises, rebirths. Yet even he paused at this one.
Speaking to Turkish outlet “61saat”, the former Galatasaray and Turkey coach did not hold back in his assessment of Salah’s arrival in Trabzon.
“We are talking about a player who has been at the highest level for years with Liverpool, and has won everything. The Europa League, the Champions League, and Club World Cups. He is a player who is indispensable,” Terim said.
Any club in the world would want him, Terim stressed. From the giants of Spain, Italy and England to the new power brokers in the Emirates and Saudi Arabia, the offers and temptations were there, backed by “enormous sums”.
Salah chose Trabzonspor.
For Terim, that decision alone elevates the move into the realm of the historic. It is not just a signing; it is a statement that a club on the Black Sea can still reach into the highest tier of the global game and pull a superstar towards its colours.
A salute to the board – and a warning to the league
Terim reserved special praise for Trabzonspor president Ertuğrul Doğan and his board, underlining just how unlikely such a deal looked on paper.
“President Ertuğrul Doğan and his administration deserve every appreciation and congratulation. Bringing in a player of this world-class value is not an easy matter at all, as he is able to go anywhere he wants. What happened is a momentous thing and deserves praise,” he said.
The message between the lines is clear: this is not routine business. This is a club punching at a weight many assumed was beyond it.
For the rest of the league, it feels like a warning shot.
A star already owning the stage
Salah has wasted no time turning that warning into reality. Five games into his Super League career, he already looks like the league’s headline act.
Four goals. One assist. A presence that changes the geometry of every attack and the mood of every stadium he walks into.
Defenders have started dropping a step deeper. Full-backs hesitate before bombing forward. The aura he built at Liverpool has travelled with him, and in Turkey it has found a new theatre.
Now comes the real test of this early surge: Galatasaray under the lights, a leader to be hunted, a rivalry that rarely forgives hesitation.
Salah has already shaken the market. On nights like this, he can shake the title race.
