Morgan Whittaker Joins Colorado Rapids from Middlesbrough
Middlesbrough’s top scorer has gone west. Morgan Whittaker has left the Riverside for Major League Soccer, signing a three-year deal with Colorado Rapids, who hold an option for a further year.
The 25-year-old forward, who joined Boro from Plymouth Argyle for £5m in January 2025, heads to the United States for an undisclosed fee and will occupy one of the Rapids’ coveted Designated Player slots. Colorado, managed by English coach Matt Wells, sit seventh in the Western Conference and have now pinned a major attacking bet on a player who has lived both extremes of form in the last 18 months.
Whittaker’s Middlesbrough Story
Whittaker’s Middlesbrough story never ran in a straight line. He arrived midway through the 2024-25 campaign with a reputation as a prolific, left-footed threat and with other clubs circling, only for his start on Teesside to stall badly. He failed to score in any of his first 16 appearances as Michael Carrick’s side slipped out of play-off contention on the final day of the season, a barren run that stretched to 25 games and tested patience in the stands.
At Preston North End, the frustration turned into something more pointed as he was ironically cheered off when substituted. For many players, that becomes the moment a move feels inevitable.
Instead, Whittaker bit back.
He finally broke his duck in a win over Ipswich Town, and the mood around him flipped almost overnight. That first goal opened the floodgates: eight strikes in 12 games, including a streak of scoring in six consecutive matches. By the end of the campaign, he had climbed from target of groans to Boro’s leading scorer, even as their promotion hopes died in the play-offs.
This season began with him still central to Carrick’s plans. Whittaker featured in five games, starting all three Championship fixtures up to the win over West Bromwich Albion on 29 August. Yet while he kept his place, the club was reshaping around him.
Middlesbrough have recruited aggressively, bringing in 12 new players over the summer. The late arrival of on-loan Brighton winger Amario Cozier-Duberry on deadline day underlined the shift in attacking options and hinted that Boro were willing to cash in if the right offer landed.
Colorado’s Proposal
Colorado’s proposal has done exactly that. For Whittaker, it is a bold career pivot: from the grind of the Championship to the profile and responsibility that comes with being a Designated Player in MLS. For Boro, it is a clean break from a forward whose time on Teesside was defined by a long drought, a blistering purple patch, and the sense that his story there never quite settled into what either side imagined when he first walked through the door.
